try to look col. That's not how we think it should be. Metal is an experience, one in which you can step outside of social conventions, look ugly and smell bad, head-bang and generally be an egotistical, manly asshole with huge balls. We treat every audience, no matter how small, no matter how old, no matter how full of scene kids, as though they came to the show to escape from their daily lives for a bit. To be a part of a performance, rather than just watch it. Performing for us isn't about synchronized headbanging, it’ about spontaneity, about involving the crowd and reaching out to the guy in the back of the venue. GAGE: As Dave said, it's hard to peg a specific show as being the most memorable. Those shows at Spackle in Green Bay are awesome because everyone is so into it (so into it that someone accidentally slammed into my guitar and jacked-up my input one time! We had to stop the set). I think our show at the Annex with the Ottoman Empire this past December was a real highlight for me because it was a great stage, packed with people, and all of the bands there were really cool. ADRENALIN: Can you tell us a little about how Erebus first came to be? DAVE: Erebus came to be as a creation of Jon (the drummer) and I. See answer to question #1 for more background. When we lost our original guitarist and bassist, we decided to push forward without looking back, recording "prey for our nation" as a two man band. I moved to Madison in 2006 and recruited Gage the guitarist(who I met because he had a car |
the bassist (who answered a flyer advertisement for a bassist for a "serious metal band"). That was what we normally call the actual start of the band, even though the name Erebus has been used by Jon and I since 2004 or so. We count 2006 as the original starting date because that was when we became truly serious about the band and began playing larger shows.
DAVE: The main influences have always been bands that strove to do something different and break from conventions. Rage Against the Machine is one of my biggest influences and perhaps the largest influence on Erebus' music of any other band. Among others are Crotchduster (for their off the wall songwriting and generally indescribable music, despite maintaining the façade of "metal") and System of a Down (for their ability to write catchy and interesting parts while still remaining heavy and coherent). GAGE: My style has always leaned towards technical stuff like solos and complex riffs. The beauty of Erebus is that |
