Short Description-
Melodic Death
Origin- Sweden
Mike’s Review- I
have had this CD in
my possession for
quite a while now.
I think I received
it well over a month
ago. I have
listened to it
several times now
and loved it every
time. It’s
cool when you can
listen to an album
over and over again
and catch different
riffs and drumbeats
each time.
This six-piece
melodic death metal
band packs a lot of
energy along with
some soothing moods
into their songs.
Influences: Dark
Tranquility and In
Flames. I love
In Flames but I
think this band is a
half notch above
them. Maybe
it’s because I have
listened to this CD
so much that I am
getting to know it.

the vein of Bathory

I love the old

These guys are

RED HARVEST-
“Internal Punishment

(Candlelight

Short Description-
Agro-industrial
Death
Origin- Norway
Mike’s Review-
Originality is
definitely a high
point for this band.
Originally I wanted
to call this band,
industrial doom but
that only describes
a portion of the
sound that you hear
on this album.
At some points the
industrial sound
almost turns into a
sci-fi techno sound.
Other times the
industrial groves
seem obsolete and
the old-school death
metal sound is
extremely dominant.
When trying to
pinpoint the sound
that Red Harvest is
releasing, you are
sent on a mental
roller coaster.
Excellent death
vocals. This
is their third album
to be released in
the US. The
first two were

Short Description-
Thrash Metal
Originality: Poland
Mike’s Review- Harsh
vocals and catchy
riffs. That’s
the first thing that
popped into my mind
when I started
listening to this
album. This
album is definitely
more metal than
thrash, but any fan
of thrash will
really get into this
album. I think
the only thing that
will make or break
this band with the
general audience, is
whether or not the
listeners like harsh
vocals. This
is their 4th
release. Each
album has been
released on a
different label.
Sunrise has been
previously signed to
Sanctuary, Sober

Now on Lifeforce

ready to come

their no bullshit

CRUCIFIED MORTALS-
"Converted by

(Stigmatized

Short
Description-Metal
Origin: USA
Darren's Review-
Crucified Mortals
formed single
handedly by Craig
Horval in 2001. He
wrote, played guitar
& bass, sang, and
programmed a drum
machine. Slowly over
the next few years,
more members were
added.
Musically...
average. Right down
the middle. Some
riffs catch my
attention, but it is
nothing I haven't
heard before. I like
to see bands excel
and what they do and
push the creative
envelope and
surprise me. This is
a good album to
score if you want
straight up metal. I
do think they have
the potential to be
better, and I will
keep an ear out for
any new material.
Craig's vocals are a
notch above average.
The album is mixed
well. Overall, not
bad, not great.

DRAUGAR- "Weathering

Short
Description-Black

Origin: West Coast,
USA.
Darren's Review-
From what I can
tell, Draguar is one
member "Hildolf".
"Weathering the
Cruse" is the groups
second effort.
Definitely black
metal oozes out my
speakers with
frightening
overtones. I have
mentioned before I
am not a big black
metal fan, but since
my discovery of
"Born of Witch", I
have grown more
tolerant. Haunting
layers compiled with
INTENSE painful
vocals and long epic
tracks. Guitars are
nice and thick. The
mix is the only weak
point. (it doesn't
seem to sound that
great with my
set-up). Better than
most and claiming to
be the new breed of
black metal, you

Darren's Review-
This band has been
around since 93.
Opening for such
acts as Morbid
Angel, At The Gates,
Obituary, Nile,
Deicide, and
Nevermore (Among
others), they do
seem to fit the
fold. This 9 track
release sounds
similar to Broken
Hope. Vocals are
DEEP and difficult
to distinguish
(growling toilet
bowl sound!). Blast
beats, punishing
riffs and percussion
fill the air.
Typically fast paced
and up-tempo. The
mix sounds good. For
the death metal fan,
I would recommend at
least checking them
out. A notch above
average. If the
vocals were better,
I would enjoy it a
lot more.

Description-Hardcore/Melodic
Metal
Origin: Unknown
Darren's Review-
Fission is a two
piece that really
plays the musical
field. They do what
it takes to avoid
having a label
pinned on them. Hard
and clean vocals,
intense to mellow,
black to white,
that's what I like
to hear. Benny
Hagglund does the
drums, guitars, and
bass, and Vintersorg
does vocals, keys
and FX. Around for a
few years (formed in
'02), Fission is one
to watch. I realize
clean to heavy
vocals is almost
cliché, but not in
this case. The
recording is decent,
the mix is as well.

how they sound live,

NIGHTMARE - "Silent

Short Description-
(Power) Metal
Origin: France
Darren's Review-
Nightmare is no
stranger to the
metal scene. Formed
in '79 and even
opening a show for
Def Leppard on their
"Pyromania" tour,
these cats go
wayyyyyyyyyy back!!
They enjoyed
moderate success in
the eighties, (big
in Japan). In '87
they decided on a 12
year break and
re-forming again in
99. I have listened
to this album and it
is hard for me to
pinpoint, which I
enjoy. I can say the
vocals could be
better. They are
more so on the
higher end of the
spectrum (ala Iron
Maiden). What is
interesting when
they bring in a
opera'ish' choir.
The music is strong,
and the opera voices
do not sound too
bad. (They are not
too frequent) This
is almost so cheesy
it's cool!. There
are some great riffs
and hooks. The
Keyboards and
blazing guitars
help. The mix sounds
good too. 12 tracks
appear on Silent
Room. I think the
fact that they are
veterans work to
their advantage.

However, this CD is

LIFEND- “Innerscars”
(Cruz Del Sur Music)
Short Description-
Melodic Death Metal
Origin- Italy
Mike’s Review-
According to their
bio, Lifend started
out playing covers
of Moonspell, Dimmu
Borgir, Edge Of
Sanity, and Anethema
(all good bands).
This is their first
full-length album of
all original
material. The music
for all the songs is
really interesting.
The synths ad a lot
to the music (the
same as other
melodic death bands
I guess). In a
couple songs you
will even hear a
saxophone. I never
pictured a saxophone
contributing very
much to a death
band, but they pull
it off rather well.
The vocals (female)
are superb. The
growling male
back-up vocals
overlap the female
vocals a few times
during each song.
The overlap doesn’t
please me very much.
However, both
vocalists are
talented and mix
well with the
melodic blend of the
music. Check them

An evil, brutal
blend of death
metal! I listened to
this CD 5 or 6 times

each time I listen

something about this
CD that keeps me
listening to it. It

LIFE IN THE SKY-

Independent release
Short
Description-
Experimental
Origin- USA
Darren's Review-
Life in the sky
challenges
traditional song
structures and all
clichés associated
with music. Coming
straight outta the
country music
capital (Nashville),
this two piece is
about the farthest
thing from country
there could be. Down
and dirty with
little production
adds to the
mysteriousness of
their debut release.
Somewhat hardcore,
mid-tempo with dirty
distorted guitars
and fuzzy bass. I
can't say I have
heard much of
anything comparable.
Vocals are iffy and
lost in the mix,
difficult to
distinguish. For a
two piece, not bad
at all. I believe
they can only
improve. I would
spend more time on
the production next
round. As I stated
in the Transmission0

give them a shot. My

Short Description-Nu-Metal
Origin: USA
Darren's Review-
Right away, it
reminds me of
something I would
not listen to more
than once. Combining
hip-hop and metal is
outdated and cliché.
There are a few
bands that do it
well, Pantheon is
less than average
with too much
cheese. On the
positive side of
things, Male and
female vocals when
combined, have a
good sweet and spicy
feel. Guitars are
adequate. Male
vocalist Ed "Demon"
Lafuentes combines
rhymes and heavy
vocal styles. The
sample dude (DJ Pyro)
makes things
interesting. I give
them credit for
attempting to take
nu-metal into a new
direction. For me,
it just doesn't
work. I have heard
all elements before
and thrills aren't
there. There are
plenty of people
that will dig it.

band does have going
for them is the
ability to introduce
fans to different
styles of music,
which is always a
good thing.

as dark, heavy, and
atmospheric. My
thoughts exactly.
The only comparable
sound out of the
hundreds of

such a unique album.

KORPIKLAANI –

Short Description –
Folk Metal
Origin- Finland
Mike’s Review- Yes,
this music gets me
in one hell of a
mood. The concept of
folk metal stills
seems a little
strange to me but at
the same time, I
love it. I guess a
band that got me
into a similar style
of music is
Moonspell. I hated
them at first, but
then learned to love
their music.
Korpiklaani (which
means Forest Clan)
has a little more
folk style to them
but overall the
music is a lot
faster than I would
expect. I wish I
could give an
awesome description
of their sound, but
you should just go
check them out on
your own. If you
haven’t heard folk
metal before,
prepare for
something far from
the norms of metal.
Aside from the usual
line-up of vocals,
guitars, bass, and
drums, Korpiklaani
add a second
percussionist and a
member who plays the
violin, jouhilkko,
flute, and
accordion. Very
Good.

Description-Hardcore

Darren's Review-
October File are
former members of
Yeast, Schindler,
and JOR (all popular
UK punk/Hardcore

such acts as Dead
Kennedy's and Unsane,
this hardcore group
has made a name for
itself. Rather heavy
and pulsating, it
grooves. Vocals hard
edged as with the
percussion. The bass
especially stands
out. Mix is
professional. The
one weak point is
the vocals, although
understandable,
there is room for

Darren's Review-
Born of Witch is
pure, pure evil, and
the vocals back it
up. Born of Witch is
Lord Chamos'
(Founder and only

I really dig the
demo mix. Vocals,
percussion, guitars
are the levels that
soothe my tastes.
What really stands
out is the thickness

guitars offer. Right
where I need 'em.
The drum machine and
the vocals fit in
the mix perfectly. A
cover of Bathory's

mood of their songs
change often from
one track to the
next, when I listen
to this album (which
I have done several

reminded of earlier

Obviously, the only

Mike’s Review- This
is a 5-song EP. 3
tracks are originals
and 2 are covers. I
regret to report
this is one of those
common situations
where I love the
music but can’t
stand the vocals.
This happens way too
often. The
Sabbath-like
doom/sludge style
music is killer
though. The two
covers on the EP,
“Burial At Sea” a
tune originally by
Saint Vitus and “Hot

I especially like
the latter of the
two. It has a neat
southern rock feel

OK, I will admit the

this is a great

ODD PROJECT- "The
Second Hand Stopped"
(Indianola Records)
Short Description-
Origin: West Coast,
USA
Darren's Review- Odd
Project formed in
2000 are from the
ever popular Orange
County, CA. " After
recording two demos,
which was not what
they were looking
for musically, they
continued to write
music and underwent
a couple line-up
changes. The band's
most recent demo
(July 2003) contains
material that Odd
Project excels in.
Metal, hardcore and
emo are just a few
influences
integrated into
their material. This
is due to the
diversity of the
band member’s
personal tastes. The
music is aimed
towards combining a
punch in your face
sound with uplifting
melodies to create
an aggressive, yet
emotional feeling.
I
was on the fence at
and had my doubts.
Especially since I
just got done
listening to 3
shitty albums that
were sent in (see
Vagh, Aesthesia,
Jacopo Galli
reviews). Very well
put together band as
well as the album. I
really like their
diversity. As a fan
of so many types of
music, Odd Project
do a great job of
"spanning the
spectrum" with there
unique style of
audio. The vocals
are hardcore spiced
with melody. There
is an instrumental
(Have I mentioned
how much I like
Instrumentals?)
track called "Love"
of all things that
is incredible (Piano
and keys fit ever so
nicely!). Guitars
all over the place
only add color &
vividness. So well
produced I give Odd
Project lots of
credit. I recommend
this album for sure.

Formed in 1985,

I got quite excited
when I saw this was

a great way to
start. The recording
is average, I had
much higher
expectations. The
music seems to get
stale after just a
few tracks. I will
admit they do have
some serious
"crunch" going on in
the guitar

Mike’s Review- Well,
I am always excited
to receive CDs to
review from bands
that live near to
where I do.
Unfortunately, I
don’t have all good
things to say about
this band. The first
two times that I
attempted to listen
to this CD, I
stopped it before
the first song was
over. This time, I
chose to listen to
the rest of the CD
so that the review
is of the entire
album and not just
the first song. I’m
glad that I did that
because the rest of
the album is a lot
better and easier to
listen to. I really
love the guitars and
bass. They are both
very entertaining
and probably what
saved me from hating
this CD. However,
the vocals weren’t
so pleasing. The
growling is cool,
but the screaming
vocals just don’t
sound like they
belong anywhere on
this CD. Not good.
The drumming is
pretty good but
there are some parts
of the song where he
uses a cowbell or
two (especially in
track two) that
doesn’t sound good.

Punkcore

Darren's Review-
This album has 38
tracks and the 1st
17 tracks were
recorded at WFMU
radio station in
1993. Tracks 18-20
were taken from the
"No War" split E.P
with Provocation.
21-25 is from the
"Sometimes" E.P.,
26-28 from the
"Logical End" album.
31-37 is from the
album "He Who Laughs

is from the
compilation
"Complete Death II",
And Track 30 is an
outtake. Now that
that's all cleared
up, on to the music.
Short, fast, blunt,
with snarly vocals.
The live section
from the radio show
is decent quality,
but could be better.
Hardcore metal
spiked with punk.
Nothing fancy here,
but gets the point
across. Vocals are
tough to deal. They
do change it up a
bit, they sound
forced and difficult
to understand and
painful. Guitars
seem to follow a
mediocre path. The
bass player is
kicking the shit

suck because they
are talented

DROTTNAR "Anamorphosis"

Dan's Review-
Hailing from
Scandinavia DROTTNAR
makes a good mark
with their EP "Anamorphosis".
Being a big fan of
black metal, I
thought this album
was good.
Unfortunately their
was only 3 actual
songs. They gave you
a taste of DROTTNAR,
but I would prefer a
'bite' to get a
better overall
impression of them.
DROTTNAR does in
fact have a
different sound than
typical black metal,
but honestly they
aren't as brutal as
they are hyped up to
be. That could be
good or bad
depending on a
metal-heads
perspective.
Overall, DROTTNAR's
songs are well
written and capture
the atmosphere they
are trying to create
for the listener.
The only downside to
DROTTNAR is the
vocals may tend to
get a little
irritating after

They do have a

the vocals are in

is a mix of very
heavy guitars,
drums, and
techno?...Honestly
the only downside to
J.K. is the

Styles: Metal /
Hardcore Melodic
Death
Dan's Review-
"Morphology of Fear"
was a split CD of
two very good bands.
Six Reasons To Kill
is a very cool band.
They are just
straight up metal,
very easy to listen
and enjoy. Six
Reasons to Kill fits
the saying "Metal up
your ass" perfectly.
It's hard not to
head-bang to their
music. Very cool
stuff. Six Reasons
To Kill did a good
job in writing songs
any metal-head can
enjoy.
Absidia's first
track starts with
"At my
signal....unleash
Hell" from the movie
Gladiator.
Ironically, that's
just what they do.
They unleash hell in
every track with
well thought brutal
harmonized guitars
and crashing drums.
They remind me of
Dismember in that
sense, but yet they
still have their own
sound. Fans of the
melodic death genre
will not be
disappointed with
Absidia. I anxiously
await some more
music by Absidia in

DRACONIAN- “Where
Lovers Morn” (Napalm
Records)
Short Description-
Melodic Doom
Origin- Sweden
Mike’s Review- Very
melodic, very doom.
Draconian’s melodic
goth doom music is
quite powerful. It
gives you a total
doom feeling and
then adds soothing
and graceful vocals
and sounds to give
it a dark
atmospheric feel. I
never imagined that
I would ever use the
words “graceful” and
“soothing” in a
review for a doom
metal act. It is a
good mix though.
To all you lovers of
female vocals, Lisa
Johansson has a very
outstanding and
mesmerizing voice.
Her voice, combined
with the male vocals
(Anders Jacobsson)
make such a great
match that it’ll
make you forget
about all those
vocalists out there
that are simply
horrible. Every
aspect of this band
gets my adrenaline
flowing. It’s no
wonder why they have
such a strong label
supporting them.

I’m not at al

High Road No. 28 is
a trio of musicians

“Time Desolation”,

Short Description-
Thrash Metal
Origin- USA
Mike’s Review- This
project was started
by Adam Tranquilli (Bloodfest,
Headlock) to
continue his music
career of aggressive
and chaotic thrash
metal. With lyrics
about people and
their value on this
planet, partying
fearlessly, death as
our fate, and more,
Without End delivers
one killer thrash
album. The non-stop
surges of brutal

listening to this

impressive feature
of this album is
Tranquilli’s guitar
solos. Mike
Fernbacker (bass)

Mike’s Review:
Haunting black
metal. With
heart-pounding rapid
beats, dark eerie

horrific
experimental vocals,
Maletic (the only
member of this

together a package
that cannot be
confused with any

little while to get

However, after a
couple tracks, the
cold bitter sounds

performed their

distant soulless

Description-Melodic

Origin: Germany (at

Darren's Review-
Falkenbach form in
1989 and have a
total of 3 albums to
date (En Their
Medh Riki Fara 1996,
and Magni
Blandinn Ok Megintin
1998). Fused
with Folk and Black
Metal, Falkenbach
has a sound all to
themselves.
When I first put
this in, it
immediately got my
attention, 2 hours
later and 3 listens
through, I have
become an addict! I
would say it is more
on the melodic side
with better than
average production
and transcending
acoustic overtones.
Also featuring
soothing hypnotic
dynamics that make
up one
hell-of-an-album!
Amorphis (newer) is
a band that I could
somewhat compare
them too. The
band had brought in
a collaboration of
guest musicians for
this album (Bolthorn-drums,
Hagalaz-additional
acoustic guitars,
Tyrann-additional
vocals) of the band
Vindsval. This
album has
prominently clean
vocals with a touch
of extreme. A
Metalheads album to
relax too, sort of
speak! I WOULD
HIGHLY recommend
getting this.
If anything it is
out of the ordinary
and a great
collection piece!
I would say I am

FORGOTTEN LORE-

Description-Black/Death

Origin: Italy
Darren's Review-
Forgotten Lore
formed in 2000 and
have since worked
very hard, releasing
2 live CD's along
the way. In 2003
they win a
competition for
emerging groups!
They then go to Rome
to complete their
first 5 song E.P.
(Glittering
Darkness) in 3 days!
As I have stated in
past reviews, this
type of metal isn't
my favorite.
Forgotten Lore does
a good job. My
biggest beef with
bands is vocal
styles. Forgotten
Lore's vocals are
very intense and
fall nothing short
of being soft. I
feel differently
towards them. The
vocals don't make me
want to shut the
shit off. Some of
these bands I would
rather listen to
1,000 cats being
skinned alive &
thrown in a vat of
rubbing alcohol then
listen to their
singing. They have a
unique enough feel
to them to separate
them from the norm.
They break away for
some clean vocals in
track 3 "Lost Soul"
which is a brave
move. I think it
works to their
advantage and there
will be only great
things ahead for
this band. The music
sounds great ripping
through my speakers.
I will listen to
this once again and
it will make it to
my PC jukebox (A
sure sign if a band
is worthy or not!).
I would recommend
this EP and to catch
them live. Thumb's
up for Forgotten

Darren's Review- Jaw

rock and roll with
some of the most
bizarre vocal

styles bring
something new to the
table and that is
always welcome. I
give them credit for
trying to be
diverse, but one
particular vocal
styling I can't
stand. It isn't so
growly I can't
understand what they
are saying, it just
is painfully BAD!
When the vocals
merge from the clean
(Which is where the
problem lies). The
music sounds good
and is well produced
with some neat
studio tricks, but
unfortunately the
vocals take away
from the overall
experience. I would
not recommend it,

Susperia, formed by

VINTERSORG- "The

Short- Melodic
Black Metal

Mike's Review: This
is what you get when
you cross folk music
with black metal.
According to their
bio, it sounds like
Vintersorg has
experimented with
many styles and
combinations of
sounds. With
this album, you get
a taste of black
metal, power metal,
& folk music, with a
majority of the
album being filled
with clean vocals.
Black metal vocals
appear in every song
but not for a very
long period of time.
At first, I liked
the cheerful snappy
attitude of the
music, but after
awhile, I got bored
of it. The
musicians display a
lot of creativity

Fans of Dismember

fresh air for me. A
lot of bands of this

Dismember thankfully

Dan's Review- After
listening to this

they are doing, they
are doing one hell
of a job doing.
Being a big fan of
Johan Liiva's work
on earlier Arch
Enemy albums, I was
really looking
forward to hearing
this album. This
album was satisfying
to me and really
enjoyed listening to
it. Some songs had a
more melodic death
metal sound, some
had a more straight
up death metal
sound, and one song
had even had a
Katatonia doom metal
sound. Everything
about Hearse just
fits. Everything
works well together.
One of the best
parts of Hearse is
the solos. If your a
fan of shredding
solos like me you'll

sometimes whip out 3
bad ass solos in a

Sometimes I don’t

lot of good, but
also a lot of bad

The good: When

well. The
heavy vocals are
strong and
captivating.
The bad: When
the music is slow

this is a name that
I have heard many

reason is because
Jungle Rot’s home is

Another reason is
because their name

There is much more

Mike’s Review-
This some slow
sludgy death metal.
The recording isn’t
excellent but it
doesn’t suck either.
It just seems to be
missing a little
high end or
something. The music
is cool enough
though that the CD
is worth a good
listen anyway. I
like the good ol’
classic riffs that
are present in Self-Inflicted’s
music. The low
growls of Keith
McCormick (that
seems to be a good
style of vocal to
compliment this
music) is impressive
and well weaved into
the music. Most of
the bands that I

more energy and
blast to them, but
this will be the
perfect CD for those

out of reach to U.S.
audiences.
Candlelight Records
Describes them as
"the musical
equivalent of Mayhem
sodomizing Neurosis
with a Godflesh
joystick".
Blut Aus Nord is
very hardcore with
eeriness lurking
from every note. As
I have mentioned
before, Black Metal
really isn't my
thing. I can tell
they are
experimenting with
different sounds
which define their
originality. You
have to give any
band credit for
that, especially
these days. Black
Metal fans should
enjoy this release.
I see Kerrang and
Terrorizer have
given them great
reviews. Blut Aus
Nord, I have no idea
what it means! It
has been released in
Europe and America.

FEAR MY THOUGHTS-
"The Great Collapse"
(Lifeforce Records)
Short
Description-Hardcore
Metal
Origin: Europe
Darren's Review-
Formed in 1998 and
have a handful of
releases under their
belt, Fear My
Thoughts have been
building a nice fan
base. From my
understanding, "The
Great Collapse" is a
bit different that
its predecessors,
taking a chance and
steering away from
its oldschool
hardcore days. I
can't comment on the
previous releases,
but this one
delivers. Fear My
Thoughts... cool
name I thought as I
pondered the CD
cover. Before I even
hit play I had high
expectations because
"Trivium" (now a
member of Roadrunner
Records) hailed from
the Lifeforce
family. As I pushed
play I was not
disappointed.
Smashing riffs came
crumbling down like
"The Great
Collapse".
Production is good
as well as the mix.
The vocals are
harsh. Unlike
typical death metal
vocals it is more of
a hardcore yell than
the cookie monster
style. For me, the
vocals are tough to
deal with all the
way through.
Luckily, the music
makes up for it.
Fear My Thoughts has
shared the stage
with Dillinger
Escape Plan, Caliban,
Catharsis, Shai
Hulud, The Icarus
Line, Shora,
Cataract and
numerous more, and
performed at some of
the biggest European
hardcore festivals.
The music can appeal
to most metal fans
and would be a great
addition to one's
collection. Already
released in Europe
and America. Go find
it!

WHORE - "Unfinished

Short
Description-Death
Metal
Origin: Unknown
Darren's Review-
When receiving this
CD I immediately
stereo-typed the
shit right out of
it. Staring at me
was a pink cover
with some of the
worst artwork I have
ever seen. Featuring
a male with a bloody
knife urinating into
the mouth of an
unborn baby of the
victim he has
obviously mutilated.
Opening up and
reading the liner
notes and seeing it
contain plenty of
serial killer
photo's and tons of
offensive pictures,
I thought this band
was going for
attention and the
music was going to
be atrocious. Well,
I was right for the
most part! Cookie
monster vocals
spewing ridiculous
lyrical content (
Ex: My friends
parents trusted
me/they let me watch
their kid/that was
the biggest mistake
they ever made/I
molested that piece
of shit/I did more
than change the kids
diapers/I fingered
that 5 month old
cunt/she used my
cock for a teething
ring). Come on, what
the fuck is this? If
they took out all
the bullshit and
left only the
instruments, it
wouldn't be half
bad. Oh yeah, and
having a pentagram,
666 and an upside
down cross on the
disc itself really
makes it sell,
right? I am so sick
of this shit. I
would stay far away
from this if I were
you!

ENSOPH- "Opus
Dementiae"
Short- Experimental
(black) Metal
Origin- Italy
Mike's Description-
In terms of
originality, this
band is fuckin'
awesome. I
haven't reviewed a
CD in the history of
Adrenalin that could
compare to Ensoph.
This band falls into
the category of
extreme metal but in
an experimental type
of way. What's
the recipe for this
artwork? Take
a black metal band,
add melody here and
there, some evil
industrial sounds,
some occasional deep
Peter Steele like
(Type O Negative)
vocals, some female
background vocals,
with some screamin'
black metal vocals,
and a brain-busting
amount of insanity.
Add that together
and you will get
what is presented on
this disc.

GREENHAVEN (Humble
Recordings)
Short Description:
Rock-N-Roll
Origin: Phoenix, AZ
USA
Darren's Review-
Greenhaven was born
in 2001 from the
heat of the Arizona
desert. Founder Matt
Strangwayes came
from Pavement
Records artists "Windingo".
He constructed the
remaining members
from the ashes of
the band "Love Not
Human".
This demo only has 2
tracks on it. The
first track
"Southbound" is
awesome! An upbeat
slammer that makes
you want to groove.
The mix sounds good
and it really gets
the blood flowin. I
like the singer.
Clear crisp vocals
with a unique twist.
The second track "Supernature"
is "so-so". A mid-temponess
that has an eerie
feel to it. The CD
did contain a video
for "Southbound"
that was very
entertaining. I see
they have been voted
Phoenix's Best Hard
Rock Band. I
definitely will keep
an my eye out for
them and look
forward to a full
length album soon!
Keep your eyes
peeled!

HARVEST OF
SOULS-Demo
Short Description:
Emotional Rock
Origin: Brooklyn, NY
USA
Darren's Review-
Harvest of Souls is
a 3 piece outfit
blending hard rock
with melody and a
twist of soulful
lyrics. The singer
Brian Sutor took
professional singing
lessons from a
renowned vocal
trainer. He later
switched from
playing guitar to
bass to fulfill the
needs of the band.
This demo contains 3
tracks. I have
listened to this
about 6 times
because I wasn't
sure how I felt
about it. It has
positives and
negatives. I do
think the singer has
a good voice. I
think the overall
feel is lacking
something. It just
doesn't reap what
the band I feel can
sow. I think they
can be a lot better.
The music is
mediocre and is slow
developing. It is
well produced and
Engineered. Anyone
looking to rock out
should think twice
before listening to
this. If you feel
like chillin, this
may be for you. I
love all kinds of
music in all types
of genres. Harvest
of Souls has what it
takes, but needs to
keep truckin'. I
would be interested
in hearing their
next release. Check
them out for
yourselves!

TORN- "The Path Less

Short- Metal
Origin- Illinois,

Mike's Description-
Wow, I received this
CD a long time ago
but forgot to review
it. It has
been in one of my CD
players for awhile
now. Anyway,
Torn always reminded
me of a familiar
band. I could
never put my finger
on it though.
The closest match
that I came up with
is the band, Soil.
Of course, there are
many other signed
acts of the same
style that could be
compared to these
guys as well.
The music is cool
(especially the
guitars). The
vocalist has great
vocal ability (but
sometimes lack
originality).
They remind me of
vocals that I hear
on the radio a lot.
Did I mention the
guitars are cool?
I would say that's
what impresses me
most about this
group. If this
CD was a little more
original, I would
add it to my
collection.

1349 - "Beyond the
Apocalypse"
(Candlelight
Records)
Short
Description-Black
Metal
Origin: Norway
Darren's Review-
1349 sums up a
talented group of
black metal masters.
Extremely potent
black metal at its
finest. 1349 was
formed in 1997, and
named for the year
the plague hit
Norway in the 14th
century. They
released a
self-titled
mini-album in 2001.
At that time they
featured then
session drummer
Frost (Satyricon).
He was so impressed
with the music and
sound of the band
became a permanent
member. They signed
with Candlelight,
and in 2002 the
released their first
full length titled
"Liberation". The
band then toured
with Gorgoroth and
Cadaver (Inc) and
performed at
numerous festivals.
Heavy and hard
hitting, this band
will please and
appeal to the fans
of Gorgoroth,
Immortal, and
Mayhem. I am not a
huge black metal
fan, but I don't
hear too much to
complain about. I am
amazed at how fast
they can play! It is
produced and
engineered well.
Lots of tempo
changes & blast
beat. Vocals are
tolerable and fit
the music. The album
will be released on
5/4/04, score it!!

Cadaver formed in
1989, and released
two albums
(Hallucinating
Anxiety, In Pains)
before disbanding in
1993. After
reforming in 1999,
their 3rd album
(Discipline) was
released in 2001.
The gained a wide
U.S fan base on a
nationwide trek with
Morbid Angel. With
their highly
controversial web
site, (They promoted
their album as the
cybershop
Cadaverinc.com where
customers could buy
Alibi for murder)
still under
investigation by the
Norwegian
Government, the band
was able to make a
name for itself.
Cadaver did not
appeal to me
personally. There is
nothing out of the
ordinary here. By
all means it is not
terrible either. The
music sounds tight.
I just don't care
for the singer. A
singer can make or
break a band. Music
seems average to me.
I always try and
listen to an album
twice before judging
it. And in this
case, I did just
that. It may fit
right up your alley
though! I see that
Candelight plans to

PRO-PAIN- "Fistful

(Candlelight USA)
Short
Description-Hardcore
Metal
Origin: USA, New
York City
Darren's Review-
Pro-Pain is no
stranger to the
metal world. There
debut was released
12 years ago (Foul
Taste of Freedom,
1992). They have
since released 9
albums, including a
"Best Of" (Best of
Pro-Pain, 1998) and
a live release (Road
Rage Live, 2001).
They have sold many
albums, toured, and
have enjoyed success
throughout their
career. When a band
can find a way to
brave the elements
and remain intact,
that says a lot to
me. There is
something to be said
about longevity. It
seems to be a rare
occurrence these
days, doesn't it?
2004's release
"Fistful of Hate" is
very powerful.
Probably the
thickest guitar
tones I have ever
heard! Heavy is an
understatement
folks! Dense, slow
to moderate chugging
guitars layered with
pounding bass,
percussion and
serious attention
getting vocals. The
songs remain true to
form throughout the
album, only straying
enough to keep the
listener
entertained. I have
not heard much from
their other
releases, but after
listening to this
album, I crave more.
"Fistful of Hate" It
is well produced and
engineered. Metal
fans will not be
disappointed.The
real highlight to me
is the guitars. As a
guitar player
myself, I am envious
of the guitar
tonality they have
infused.
Great news!! It was
released in the

9MM SOLUTION- "The
Trial"
Short
Description-Hardcore
Metal
Origin: Milwaukee,
WI-USA
Darren's Review-
This 6 song E.P. I
was pumped and
excited to hear. I
knew a bit about
them, and they are a
local band! When I
received the disc,
expectations were
already set. (I had
checked out two
tracks online) And
they were met! 9mm
Solution has
performed with
Anthrax, Society 1,
Dope & Slaves on
Dope to name a few.
They also recorded
with Producer Chris
Djuricic (Soil,
Order by Chaos) and
the EP was Mastered
by Trevor Sadler
(Nine Inch Nail,
Crash Test
Dummies... hmmmmmmmm,
hmmmmmmmm, hmmmmm,
hmmmmmmmm !!!). The
end result is a well
put together E.P.
The songs have a
nice base full of
metal feel, while
experimental vocals
breathe new life. I
like the vocal
stylings. There are
low growls, high
screams, and
transcending,
melodic layers
placed throughout.
When a band has
enough balls to
gamble, branch out
and try something
new, that says a lot
to me. I wouldn't
say they are
experimental enough
to discern the
"metal fan", but
enough to put there
own unique stamp on
the metal world. I
would like to check
them out live. I
have read they take
performing very
seriously and really
push to make the
experience one of a
kind. I wish the
best of luck to

ETERNAL SILENCE-
"The Dawning Of
Chaos" demo
Short Description-
Death Metal
Origin: USA- New
London, WI
Mike's Review- Wow,
this is some killer
death metal! I
heard of this band
quite a few years
ago but never gave
them a good listen.
I just obtained this
demo with their
newer material on it
and now I am kicking
myself for not
getting my hands on
this demo earlier!
The base of their
music is pure
ass-kicking death
metal. Within their
songs lurk some
melodic moods, a
little black metal
influence, some very
catchy riffs, and
enough brutal energy
to make you feel
like God of the
world you live in. I
think what really
put this band over
the edge for me
though is that both
guitarists and the
bassist all have the
ability to growl and
perform their vocals
duties very well.

Thrashy Death Metal
Origin: USA-

Mike's Review-
Have you heard of
these guys before?
Experiment Fear made
their mark in the
underground scene
quite a few years
back but then
disappeared.
Now they are back
and ready to take on
any hurdles that are
thrown their way.
When you give this
promo a listen,
their brutal thrashy
death metal will put
you in awe.
The drums are
incredible with the
speed and precision.
The guitars and bass
are magnificent and
will stick in your
head long after the
CD has ended.
And the
vocals....damn I
wish I could growl
and scream like
that! What a
great group of
musicians. I
don't think they
have recreated a
website yet since
their return to the
underground but you
can contact Tom Ales

Hopefully a

Short Description-
Bizarre Metal
Origin: USA-

Mike's Review- First
impression.....really
cool. The
vocalist sounds like
he wants to tear
into your head and
munch on your
brains. The
music is mostly has
a death metal feel
to it, but often
wanders off to some
type of sci-fi
sounding synth and
guitars and
sometimes a melodic
tangent. Hell
yeah, this is the
perfect band for a
metalhead that is
searching for
something different.
The fact that every
song on this CD can
be well
distinguished from
the others proves
the originality and
talent that Daath
possesses. I
think everybody

The recording is
great. The

The vocals are

Darren's Review-
This is Insomnium's
follow up to 2002's
In the Halls of
Awaiting. Compared
to early In Flames,
Amorphis, Opeth and
Children of Bodom, I
would agree. It does
remind me of
Amorphis (Elegy era)
the most. Melody is
blended with heavy
attributes to from
an awesome mix. It
can go from
beautifully acoustic
to purely
aggressive, reaching
all points between.
Vocals alternate
with the mood. They
do a great job of
combining fragments
to complete a great
listening experience
for the music fan. I
am not bored with
this, the vocals are
in tolerable range.
Just when I think
something could get
stale, it morphs

Description-Groovy
Black Metal
Origin: Norway
Darren's Review-
Holy Shit!! These
guys look evil as
hell! Formed in 2000
from the ashes of
Tulus. This is their
3rd release. There
lyrical concept I
thought was
interesting. It is
about a dark, rocky
chamber. The last
stop before souls
are taken away. The
dead wake up and
dance to the sounds
of violins while
awaiting demons to
collect their souls.
If you believe in
that sort of thing.
On to the music.
Setting the vocals
aside for a minute,
I really dig it. All
elements are there.
Bass is pounding,
guitars hit the
grooviness switch,
and alternate to
extremes when
necessary. Drums
sound great. Now,
the vocals. Damnit!!
To me, this is what
makes or breaks a
band. In my book,
this doesn't
suffice. It's not
terrible, but enough
to keep me from
listening to it
again. Most tracks
are mid-tempo, and
some are up-tempo.
The CD also came

Darren's Review-
Whoa....
Craziness!!! The
first track was a
freakish blend of
haunting tones
leading to the
ultimate
anticipation, then
WHAM!! hits you like
a mach truck! The
title track "Worlds
beyond the Veil"
comes smashing down
with INSANE drumming
(drum machine, well
programmed), growly
vocals, extremely
heavy guitars with
plenty of harmonics.
There are well
placed sound effects
throughout the
album. The vocals
are very intense. I
believe it fits the
music, but a bit
much for me. Guitars
are above average.
There is definitely
talent here.
Percussion fits too.
If they recruited a
drummer, he would
have to be a
superhero!! This
music for the most
part is fast tempo'd.
I like the mix of
mellow to hardcore
and back. They
formed in 1998. The
name was derived

One of them features
the roasting of a
poser (probably a
Linkin' Park fan").

RONIN- "The Sun
Rises In The East"
Short Description-
Heavy Rock
Origin: USA- New
York, NY
Mike's Review- Yeah,
I'm diggin' this.
This is not a style
of music that I
would get into a
whole lot, but all
the elements of this
music seem to click.
The music, sometimes
slow and almost
psychedelic and
sometimes a heavy
rock, sets the
"kickback and let
loose" feeling
throughout the whole
CD. Track 3,
"Portal" is one to
avoid though.
I am not sure what
the plans were when
those vocals racks
were recorded, but
they suck. The
rest of the vocals
are good though.

WACKOR- demo
Short Description-
metal
Origin: Hungary
Mike's Review: This
is a 3-piece
rock/metal band with
a little growling
added in. This
band can be easily
compared to bands
such as Disturbed &
Evanesence (a
combination of the
two). The
talent is there but
there but with only
three tracks on the
demo it is hard to
tell where they rank
with their
originality.
Overall the music is
OK. The vocals
are good. It
just seems like
something is missing
in the music.

CHAINSNAP- "Hollow"
Short
Description- Dark
Metal-core
Origin: USA-
Middleton, Wisconsin
Mike's Review- I am
always psyched to
hear music from
bands in my area so
I couldn't wait to
put this CD in and
give it a listen.
My first impression
was good but after
hearing tracks 2 and
3 on this album, I
wasn't sure if I
wanted to hear
anymore. The
heavy vocals are
cool but the higher
clean vocals weren't
very appealing at
all. Luckily,
those vocals don't
surface in other
tracks and the rest
of the album was
cool. They
categorize their
music as dark
metal-core.
Sounds like there is
a bit of 80's thrash
added in to the mix
as well.
Overall this is a
good CD, I just
didn't get use to
those vocals that I
mentioned earlier.

CNN ANNWN
(Coo-nah-NOON)- demo
Short Description-
Thrash Metal
Origin- USA-
Minnesota
Mike's Review- This
is thrash metal with
some power metal
influence to it.
Some old-school punk
influences seem to
lurk within the
music as well.
The CD is demo has
excellent sound
quality and it is
packed full of
chargin' energy.
The drums, guitars,
bass, and vocals are
all delivered to you
as a package of
metal goodness.
The guitars are the
most impressive with
their various solos
and brain splitting
riffery. Check
out Cwn Annwn at
www.cwnannwn.com
NOTE: The
clean higher-pitched
vocals sound a bit
unintentionally
harsh and could use
a little work but
the band is still
worth checking out.
DOWNSET- "Universal"
(Hawino Records)
Short Description-
Rap Metal
Origin: USA- L.A.,
California
Mike's Review- You
just can't get any
more rap metal than
this band. The
music is very metal
and the vocals are
very rap (with a
little metal scream
added in). the
music is very cool.
The vocals are
disappointing
(boring) though.
There needs to be
more emotion added
to them. I
wish I could give
this CD a better
review since it is
well-produced and
being well-promoted.
I don't like it.

HARDER AND HEAVIER (Madacy
Entertainment)
Short Description-
80's metal
compilation
Origin: USA- Santa
Monica, CA
Mike's Review-
"Welcome To The
Jungle" by Quiet
Riot? "Shout
At The Devil" by
Electric Hellfire
Club"?
Interesting concept.
I like it.
This compilation
contains 16 tracks
of rock n roll and
metal tunes from the
80's era that are
performed by other
bands from the 80's
era. This is
worth checking out
and should be an
interesting addition
to any collection
(unless of course
you are too young to
know what 80's metal
is). My
favorite track on
here has to be
Metallica's "Jump In
The Fire" performed
by The Ramones.

KURTZ- "A Metal
Heritage For Young
America"
Short Description-
Sludge Metal
Origin: United
States- Atlanta,
Georgia
Mike's Review- Wow,
I like this stuff!
Sludgy groove music
in the vein of
Clutch. Vocals
are vice and heavy,
very dominate.
The guitars are
really impressive as
well. Instead
of following the
same path throughout
he song and just
chuggin' along, they
sometimes wander off
to make sure you are
well aware of their
existence.

BOWLSCRAPER-"Red
Hair Revolution"
Short
Description-Thrash
meets Heaviness!
Origin: United
States-Detroit,
Michigan
Darren's Review-
Mutha Fucka!!! I was
fond of this band
right from the
start. I love the
driving riffs and
straightforwardness
Bowlscraper has to
offer, not to
mention their name!
I really dig the
vocal style. You can
understand the
message they are
trying to convey,
without piercing
your eardrums. It
seems to fit the
music perfectly.
Guitars, bass and
percussion are dead
nuts on. There is
tons of energy
harnessed by this
foursome. Live I am
sure they are a
forced to be
reckoned with! The
only thing I had a
quarrel about was
the solo's. Note for
note there is
nothing wrong with
them, but it seemed
to lack the muscle
the rhythm offers.
When the song broke
into solo, something
seemed to be
missing. This is
only a minor flaw
and is easily
overlooked. I have
had this album for a
little over a week
and have listened to
about a dozen times
and have played it
for friends without
any hesitation. 14
tracks of punishment
await! This is a
great score! Check
