CIPHER SYSTEM- “Central Tunnel Eight” (Lifeforce Records)
    Short Description- Melodic Death
    Origin- Sweden
Mike’s Review- I have had this CD in my possession for quite a while now.  I think I received it well over a month ago.  I have listened to it several times now and loved it every time.  It’s cool when you can listen to an album over and over again and catch different riffs and drumbeats each time.  This six-piece melodic death metal band packs a lot of energy along with some soothing moods into their songs.  Influences: Dark Tranquility and In Flames.  I love In Flames but I think this band is a half notch above them.  Maybe it’s because I have listened to this CD so much that I am getting to know it.  Check them out at www.cipher-system.com

DAMNATION- “Destructo Evangelina” (Candlelight Records)
    Short Description- Satanic Black Metal
    Originality- Hell
Mike’s Review- Dark death/black metal in the vein of Bathory and Darkthrone.  I love the old school guitar sounds that is heard most of the way through this album.  Not much else to say about this band.  Um, evil, black, death, old school….yeah that about covers it.  Check them out at

Vocals: B  Instruments: B-  Energy Level: C  Originality: C  Overall: C+

HECATE ENTHRONED- “Redimus” (Candlelight Records)
    Short Description- Black Metal
    Originality- England
Mike’s Review- I never really used the term atmospheric black metal before but that sounds like a good term to use right now.  These guys are atmospheric Black Metal.  Yep, it is some evil black metal with some atmospheric keyboard sounds added to it.  Very cool.  Listening to this CD give me this glorious hateful feeling.  I am happy, yet I want to slice you open.   www.hecate-enthroned.co.uk

RED HARVEST- “Internal Punishment Programs” (Candlelight Records)
    Short Description- Agro-industrial Death
    Origin- Norway
Mike’s Review- Originality is definitely a high point for this band.  Originally I wanted to call this band, industrial doom but that only describes a portion of the sound that you hear on this album.  At some points the industrial sound almost turns into a sci-fi techno sound.  Other times the industrial groves seem obsolete and the old-school death metal sound is extremely dominant.  When trying to pinpoint the sound that Red Harvest is releasing, you are sent on a mental roller coaster.  Excellent death vocals.  This is their third album to be released in the US.  The first two were released on Relapse Records.  Check them out and see for yourself.   www.redharvest.com

Vocals: B+  Instruments: B  Energy Level: B-  Originality: A  Overall: B+

SUNRISE- “Traces To Nowhere” (Lifeforce Records)
    Short Description- Thrash Metal
    Originality: Poland
Mike’s Review- Harsh vocals and catchy riffs.  That’s the first thing that popped into my mind when I started listening to this album.  This album is definitely more metal than thrash, but any fan of thrash will really get into this album.  I think the only thing that will make or break this band with the general audience, is whether or not the listeners like harsh vocals.  This is their 4th release.  Each album has been released on a different label.  Sunrise has been previously signed to Sanctuary, Sober Mind, and Youth Culture Records.  Now on Lifeforce Records, they are ready to come charging at you with their no bullshit metal attitude.  www.sunrise.straightedge.pl

CRUCIFIED MORTALS- "Converted by Decapitation" (Stigmatized Records)

Short Description-Metal
    Origin: USA
Darren's Review- Crucified Mortals formed single handedly by Craig Horval in 2001. He wrote, played guitar & bass, sang, and programmed a drum machine. Slowly over the next few years, more members were added.
Musically... average. Right down the middle. Some riffs catch my attention, but it is nothing I haven't heard before. I like to see bands excel and what they do and push the creative envelope and surprise me. This is a good album to score if you want straight up metal. I do think they have the potential to be better, and I will keep an ear out for any new material. Craig's vocals are a notch above average. The album is mixed well. Overall, not bad, not great. http://crucifiedmortals.unitedheadbanger.com/

DRAUGAR- "Weathering the Curse" (Moribundcult Records)

Short Description-Black Metal
    Origin: West Coast, USA.
Darren's Review- From what I can tell, Draguar is one member "Hildolf". "Weathering the Cruse" is the groups second effort. Definitely black metal oozes out my speakers with frightening overtones. I have mentioned before I am not a big black metal fan, but since my discovery of "Born of Witch", I have grown more tolerant. Haunting layers compiled with INTENSE painful vocals and long epic tracks. Guitars are nice and thick. The mix is the only weak point. (it doesn't seem to sound that great with my set-up). Better than most and claiming to be the new breed of black metal, you decide. www.moribundcult.com

DRAWN & QUARTERED - "Return of the Black Death" (Moribund Records)

Short Description-Death Metal
    Origin: West Coast, USA
Darren's Review- This band has been around since 93. Opening for such acts as Morbid Angel, At The Gates, Obituary, Nile, Deicide, and Nevermore (Among others), they do seem to fit the fold. This 9 track release sounds similar to Broken Hope. Vocals are DEEP and difficult to distinguish (growling toilet bowl sound!). Blast beats, punishing riffs and percussion fill the air. Typically fast paced and up-tempo. The mix sounds good. For the death metal fan, I would recommend at least checking them out. A notch above average. If the vocals were better, I would enjoy it a lot more. www.geocities.com/Drawn_an_Quartered  or www.moribundcult.com

FISSION - "Crater" (Napalm Records)

Short Description-Hardcore/Melodic Metal
    Origin: Unknown
Darren's Review- Fission is a two piece that really plays the musical field. They do what it takes to avoid having a label pinned on them. Hard and clean vocals, intense to mellow, black to white, that's what I like to hear. Benny Hagglund does the drums, guitars, and bass, and Vintersorg does vocals, keys and FX. Around for a few years (formed in '02), Fission is one to watch. I realize clean to heavy vocals is almost cliché, but not in this case. The recording is decent, the mix is as well. It will be interesting to see how they sound live, I will be watching out for them. 11 tracks worth diving into! Hats off to both of these guys for their creation. www.napalmrecords.com

NIGHTMARE - "Silent Room" (Napalm Records)

Short Description- (Power) Metal
    Origin: France
Darren's Review- Nightmare is no stranger to the metal scene. Formed in '79 and even opening a show for Def Leppard on their "Pyromania" tour, these cats go wayyyyyyyyyy back!! They enjoyed moderate success in the eighties, (big in Japan). In '87 they decided on a 12 year break and re-forming again in 99. I have listened to this album and it is hard for me to pinpoint, which I enjoy. I can say the vocals could be better. They are more so on the higher end of the spectrum (ala Iron Maiden). What is interesting when they bring in a opera'ish' choir. The music is strong, and the opera voices do not sound too bad. (They are not too frequent) This is almost so cheesy it's cool!. There are some great riffs and hooks. The Keyboards and blazing guitars help. The mix sounds good too. 12 tracks appear on Silent Room. I think the fact that they are veterans work to their advantage. Find out for yourselves... www.nightmarmusic.com

CROATAN – “Drunken Masters” (Peace Or Die Records)

    Short Description- Thrash/Doom
    Origin- Cincinnati, OH
Mike’s Review- After reading their bio and checking out their website, I really wanted to like this two-piece thrash/doom/melodic noise band. The mix of styles is cool. However, this CD is about to start a nice collection of dust on my shelf of rejection. The two members of Croatan seem to have potential but what I hear on this CD is not good. The recording quality doesn’t seem to help matters either. www.peaceordierecords.com

ETERNAL FLIGHT- “Positive Rage” (Cruz Del Sur Music)

    Short Description- Power Metal
    Origin- France
Mike’s Description- I would have liked this CD a lot better 15 years ago. Power Metal is a style of metal that I gave up a while back. The music of Eternal Flight is very good and entertaining. The vocalist, Gerard Fois (ex-Dream Child) sounds impressive. I am not a huge fan of the high-pitched power metal vocals though. You can check them out at www.cruzdelsurmusic.com

LIFEND- “Innerscars” (Cruz Del Sur Music)

    Short Description- Melodic Death Metal
    Origin- Italy
Mike’s Review- According to their bio, Lifend started out playing covers of Moonspell, Dimmu Borgir, Edge Of Sanity, and Anethema (all good bands). This is their first full-length album of all original material. The music for all the songs is really interesting. The synths ad a lot to the music (the same as other melodic death bands I guess). In a couple songs you will even hear a saxophone. I never pictured a saxophone contributing very much to a death band, but they pull it off rather well. The vocals (female) are superb. The growling male back-up vocals overlap the female vocals a few times during each song. The overlap doesn’t please me very much. However, both vocalists are talented and mix well with the melodic blend of the music. Check them out at www.lifend.org

ONUS- EP 2004

    Short Description- Death
    Origin- Appleton, WI USA
Mike’s Review- Yes! An evil, brutal blend of death metal! I listened to this CD 5 or 6 times now and like it more each time I listen to it. There is something about this CD that keeps me listening to it. It is 20 minutes long, yet doesn’t seem long enough. The deep guttural growl/screaming vocals are haunting. Some of the riffs are extremely catchy and some of the melodic tone is soothing, yet Onus manages to keep the in-your-face, evil bliss feel to it. Very cool. Check out the guitar solo in track 2. Nice. Check these guys out at www.evilonus.com

PLUTONIUM – “Wind Of Change” demo

    Short Description- Doom Metal
    Origin- Sweden
Mike’s Review- This is some slow-ass doom. Man, this stuff can put you to sleep. Very depressing music with a drum machine doing all the monotonous percussion. Anybody having troubles sleeping? This is your answer. This band has only been around for a year now. Impressive recording for being their first. They pack a lot of “evil” into their songs. This CD is perfect for anybody looking for a new melodic doom band to get into. I see a good future for these guys. Check them out. For more information, contact J. LIFE IN THE SKY- "Illusions of Loudness" - Independent release

Short Description- Experimental
    Origin- USA
Darren's Review- Life in the sky challenges traditional song structures and all clichés associated with music. Coming straight outta the country music capital (Nashville), this two piece is about the farthest thing from country there could be. Down and dirty with little production adds to the mysteriousness of their debut release. Somewhat hardcore, mid-tempo with dirty distorted guitars and fuzzy bass. I can't say I have heard much of anything comparable. Vocals are iffy and lost in the mix, difficult to distinguish. For a two piece, not bad at all. I believe they can only improve. I would spend more time on the production next round. As I stated in the Transmission0 review, fans of heavy music should give them a shot. My favorite track is "Red to Blue". www.lifeinthesky.com

PANTHEON- "Crush The Weak" - Guava Jamm Entertainment

Short Description-Nu-Metal
    Origin: USA
Darren's Review- Right away, it reminds me of something I would not listen to more than once. Combining hip-hop and metal is outdated and cliché. There are a few bands that do it well, Pantheon is less than average with too much cheese. On the positive side of things, Male and female vocals when combined, have a good sweet and spicy feel. Guitars are adequate. Male vocalist Ed "Demon" Lafuentes combines rhymes and heavy vocal styles. The sample dude (DJ Pyro) makes things interesting. I give them credit for attempting to take nu-metal into a new direction. For me, it just doesn't work. I have heard all elements before and thrills aren't there. There are plenty of people that will dig it. www.pantheonrock.com What I think this band does have going for them is the ability to introduce fans to different styles of music, which is always a good thing.

TRAMSMISSION 0- "0" - Go Kart Records

Short Description-HardCORE/Atmospheric
    Origin- Netherlands
Darren's Review- Transmission0 describes themselves as dark, heavy, and atmospheric. My thoughts exactly. The only comparable sound out of the hundreds of thousands of bands I have heard would be Neurosis. All over the map with tempo changes, mood swings, spacey rhythms make this such a unique album. I have listened to it many times because I just can't seem to nail down my true feelings on it. Anything that makes me critical listen and summons me into deep thought is a wonderful thing. Difficult to compare, but I would suggest for the music fan, particularly of heavy styles, to check this out. The guitar player (Mischa Van Rodijnen) did the production and mixing. An excellent job on eeriness and instruments. Fans of music, don't let this one go! www.transmission0.com

ATROCITY- “Atlantis” (Napalm Records)

Short Description- Atmospheric Thrash/Death
    Origin- unknown
Mike’s Review- Awesome! This CD definitely has what it takes to keep me listening to the entire track listing. With their history dating back to 1985, Atrocity has experimented with many sounds and styles. Their practice and experimentation has definitely paid off. This album is a flawless blend of atmospheric death, melody, brutality, thrash, catchy riffs, powerful vocals, and much more. A metal head would have to be insane not to check these guys out. BESEECH- “Drama” (Napalm Records)

Short Description- Goth Rock
    Origin- Sweden
Mike’s Review- I originally want to call them Goth Metal but even though it is good, I can’t quite classify this band as metal. This is Beseech’s 4th release. If you are a Beseech fan, you will realize that this album is much more experimental, atmospheric, and in touch with peace of mind. Erik Molarin’s deep vocals and Lotta Hoglin’s majestic female vocals compliment one other very well. It is a perfect match of voices to flow with the gothic grooves of the instruments. If you are looking for music that is a little lighter and very atmospheric, check them out. An interview with Lotta can also be found on Adrenalin’s interview page. www.beseech.net

KORPIKLAANI – “Spirit of the Forest” (Napalm Records)

Short Description – Folk Metal
    Origin- Finland
Mike’s Review- Yes, this music gets me in one hell of a mood. The concept of folk metal stills seems a little strange to me but at the same time, I love it. I guess a band that got me into a similar style of music is Moonspell. I hated them at first, but then learned to love their music. Korpiklaani (which means Forest Clan) has a little more folk style to them but overall the music is a lot faster than I would expect. I wish I could give an awesome description of their sound, but you should just go check them out on your own. If you haven’t heard folk metal before, prepare for something far from the norms of metal. Aside from the usual line-up of vocals, guitars, bass, and drums, Korpiklaani add a second percussionist and a member who plays the violin, jouhilkko, flute, and accordion. Very Good. www.korpiklaani.com

LEAVE’S EYES- “Lovelorn” (Napalm Records)

Short Description- Rock
    Origin- Norway
Mike’s Description- I like chick vocals, but this album just isn’t my type of music. The vocals are very angelic and the music is very symphonic. There are some interesting sounds added to some of the music as well. I am just finding this album a little on the boring side right now. But, you never know. Some day when I am spaced out or feel like listening to some slow atmospheric rock, this may be the CD I turn to. Check it out at www.leaveseyes.com

OCTOBER FILE- "A Long Walk on a Short Pier" (Candlelight Records)

Short Description-Hardcore Metal
    Origin:: UK
Darren's Review- October File are former members of Yeast, Schindler, and JOR (all popular UK punk/Hardcore bands). Supporting such acts as Dead Kennedy's and Unsane, this hardcore group has made a name for itself. Rather heavy and pulsating, it grooves. Vocals hard edged as with the percussion. The bass especially stands out. Mix is professional. The one weak point is the vocals, although understandable, there is room for improvement. Guitars do the job and fit the music. Compared to Killing Joke, Big Black, and Boy Sets Fire, fans of these bands should mend to this. Check them out on tour in the UK with Ghostride (former members of Will Haven) Release date is 10/19/04.

SIRENIA- “An Elixir For Existence” (Napalm Records)

Short Description- A Death/Metal/Goth mix
    Origin- Norway
Mike’s Review- Impressive. I almost gave you “symphonic death” as their short description. However, this is another band that likes to take elements from both end of the metal spectrum and combine mix them to come up with something unique. The death growl is superb. The female vocals are mesmerizing. The atmospheric metal/rock sound is definitely nothing I will ever grow tired of hearing. Sirenia is one of those bands that I wish I heard of earlier. AESTHESIA- "Drawn to the Flame" (Indy)

Short Description- Rock -N- Roll
    Origin: Ohio, USA
Darren's Review - Nothing exciting to me here. Guitars are better than average, but the vocals add too much cheese for me. It reminds me of a band you would see playing at a small time bar in the middle of nowhere. The recording sounds good, and if you are a fan of the Whitesnake, Dream Theater, and Rush (all of which I am not) than this may be for you??? I choose to pass. The summary even listed old MetallicA and AC/DC as a comparative sound, Which personally insults me. www.aesthesia-world.com

BORN OF WITCH- "Onward to the Sabbat" (Terror Wolfe Productions)

Short Description-Ritualistic Black Metal
    Origin: USA
Darren's Review- Born of Witch is pure, pure evil, and the vocals back it up. Born of Witch is Lord Chamos' (Founder and only member) 4 song demo. I really dig the demo mix. Vocals, percussion, guitars are the levels that soothe my tastes. What really stands out is the thickness and heaviness the guitars offer. Right where I need 'em. The drum machine and the vocals fit in the mix perfectly. A cover of Bathory's "The Return of Darkness & Evil" is right on. This demo is limited to hand numbered small quantities. I definitely suggest scoring one. I see a huge window of opportunity for Born of Witch and will be anxiously awaiting a full-length. Although I prefer real percussion over synthetic, and black metal is not my favorite, I give this demo high marks. Track titles: Ritual of Blackest Sin, Obedience to Satan Never Dies, The Final Sacrifice, The Return of Darkness and Evil (Bathory Cover). BURNING SKIES- “Murder By Means Of Existence” (Lifeforce Records)

Short Description- Brutal Thrashy Death Metal
    Origin- UK
Mike’s Review- Wow, check out the growls on this album. They are deep and powerful, yet they fall short of sounding like a drunk, pissed off cookie monster. However, the most impressive element of this CD is percussion. Stu (I have no idea what his last name is) can kick the shit out of that drum set of his. When I listen to a CD, and the drums are the instruments that stick out the most, it totally adds a new dimension to the album. Brutal, thrashy death/metal with a major attitude problem. Yeah, this is the shit. Check them out at www.burningskies.co.uk  It’ll be worth the effort.

DEADSOIL- “The Venom Divine” (Lifeforce Records)
    Short Description- Hardcore/metal
    Origin- Germany
Mike’s Review- Hell yeah! This is some awesome energy pumping metal insanity. I can’t give these guys many points for originality, but they do what they do as well as any of the other hardcore thrash bands out there. I can hear hints of Hatebreed, Sepultura, and The Haunted on this album. The harsh vocals are very powerful. I picture a brutal mosh pit at Deadsoil’s shows. Check them out at www.deadsoil.net

ENTOMBED- “Inferno/Averno” (Candlelight Records)
    Short Description- Metal
    Origin- Sweden
Mike-s Review- Entombed is one of those bands that have survived the many changes that the music industry has gone through over the years. The beginning of their existence dates back to 1987. With this 2-disc album being their 8th release, Entombed proves that they still have what it takes to remain a solid member of the metal industry. Even though the speed and mood of their songs change often from one track to the next, when I listen to this album (which I have done several times now), I am reminded of earlier music from Slayer, Pitch Shifter, and maybe even a little bit of Crowbar. Obviously, the only way to get a true feel for their sound though is to check them out. Go to www.entombed.org and see for yourself. The album should also be available at just about any store near you that sells metal CD’s.

    Short Description- Black Metal
    Origin- Buckinghamshire, England
Mike’s Review- The guitarist is awesome. That’s the only good thing that I have to say about this band. The sound is intense and probably worth a more in-depth listen, but the sound quality of this album sucks and isn’t tolerable. It is amazing how much a bad recording can affect an overall opinion. GOATSNAKE- “Trampled Under Hoof” (Southern Lord Records)
    Short Description- Doom
    Origin- Unknown
Mike’s Review- This is a 5-song EP. 3 tracks are originals and 2 are covers. I regret to report this is one of those common situations where I love the music but can’t stand the vocals. This happens way too often. The Sabbath-like doom/sludge style music is killer though. The two covers on the EP, “Burial At Sea” a tune originally by Saint Vitus and “Hot Red” by Black Oak Arkansas, are good. I especially like the latter of the two. It has a neat southern rock feel to it. Anyway, you can find more at www.southernlord.com

JACOPO GALLI- "Timedrops" (Indy)
    Short Description- Progressive Rock

Darren's Review - OK, I will admit the music is not bad on this release. What I could go without on is the vocals. I give the man credit on his creation. As a recent university graduate Engineer, (Tim, Jake.. you reading?) he has played guitar and keyboards most of his life and is shows. Musically, this is a great piece. The recording sounds good. Listing influences such as Fates Warning, Angra, Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Symphony X, Iron Maiden, Rush. I feel that all his influences have below average vocals, as does Jacopo Galli. ODD PROJECT- "The Second Hand Stopped" (Indianola Records)
    Short Description-
    Origin: West Coast, USA
Darren's Review- Odd Project formed in 2000 are from the ever popular Orange County, CA. " After recording two demos, which was not what they were looking for musically, they continued to write music and underwent a couple line-up changes. The band's most recent demo (July 2003) contains material that Odd Project excels in. Metal, hardcore and emo are just a few influences integrated into their material. This is due to the diversity of the band member’s personal tastes. The music is aimed towards combining a punch in your face sound with uplifting melodies to create an aggressive, yet emotional feeling.
I was on the fence at and had my doubts. Especially since I just got done listening to 3 shitty albums that were sent in (see Vagh, Aesthesia, Jacopo Galli reviews). Very well put together band as well as the album. I really like their diversity. As a fan of so many types of music, Odd Project do a great job of "spanning the spectrum" with there unique style of audio. The vocals are hardcore spiced with melody. There is an instrumental (Have I mentioned how much I like Instrumentals?) track called "Love" of all things that is incredible (Piano and keys fit ever so nicely!). Guitars all over the place only add color & vividness. So well produced I give Odd Project lots of credit. I recommend this album for sure.

POTENTIAL THREAT SF- "Self Titled (5 Track Demo)" (Indy)
    Short Description- Metal
    Origin: San Fran, USA
Darren's Review - Formed in 1985, disbanded in 1991, and reformed in 1999. They have shared the stage with some big names over the years (Slayer, Testament, Death Angel, M.O.D., King Diamond, Agnsotic Front). Of course you have high expectations when reading all of this. I got quite excited when I saw this was recorded at "The Plant" in Sausalito, CA. Guitar heavy is a great way to start. The recording is average, I had much higher expectations. The music seems to get stale after just a few tracks. I will admit they do have some serious "crunch" going on in the guitar department. The vocals aren't too bad either. I didn't care for the percussion and how it sounds in the mix. Average would be a good description for them, heard better, heard worse. www.potentialthreatsf.com.

    Short Description- Metal

Mike’s Review- I guess this music would best classified as power metal. The music is very “power metal” sounding. The guitars are very good. The vocals are more of the “rock” flavor with a bit of power metal added to them. I hated the vocals the first time I heard them. The sound reminded me of vocals that I would have heard ten years ago. But, now that I listen to them again, they don’t seem as bad. They fit well with the music. They are kind of like Bruce Dickinson meets Judas Priest (Halford). Overall, not a bad CD for being a 5-song self-produced album. Check them out at www.yoc.kindir.com

    Origin- Quebec, Canada
Mike’s Description- At first glance of this CD (band name, cover, ect.), I lowered my expectations right away. I was completely wrong with that judgment. I slid this CD into my stereo and hit play. To my surprise, not only did I listen to this CD in it’s entirety, I listened to it twice. Death vocals. Death music with punk, hardcore, groove, and metal influences. The music is very entertaining and catchy. This band should appeal to a wide range of metalheads due to its mix of influences. This is their 4th album in their 10-year history, Go check them out at www.ghoulunatics.com

JUGGERNOT – “Necessary Evil”

Short Description- Heavy Metal
    Origin- Indiana, USA
Mike’s Review- This is some straight forward heavy metal here. The musicians seem to be talented. The sound quality of the CD is pretty good. The music kinda reminds me of Godsmack and bands in that genre. Overall, the music is good but not very exciting. The energy level is just not there for this style of music. NUESTROS DERECHOS- 4-song demo

Short Description- Thrash Metal/Punk
    Origin- Netherlands
Mike’s Review- Cool, this is the first band from the Netherlands that I got to review that wasn’t black or death metal. I am happy to say that I am not disappointed with it either. Their style fits very comfortably in the thrash/punk genres. They do an excellent job making sure they stay away from that dreadful nu-metal sound by adding a mix of old-school hardcore punk to their thrash metal sound. Very good. This is definitely a good CD for you to check out if you are into this genre of music. You can show your support and check these guys out by going to www.nuestrosderechos.nl

SKIN KRAWL- 3-song demo
    Short Description- Suicide Death
    Origin: Louisiana, USA
Mike’s Review- This is a very intense band who focuses their energy on playing music as an art form. With lyrics all revolving around the topic of suicide, the dominant sounds of Skin Krawl proved to be a hidden treasure to the music industry. It took me a second listen before I truly grasped the artistic view of the band. Soon after, I was digging the experimental sound. Overall, this is a band for all of you to check out. www.skinkrawl.com

AZRAEL- "Into Shadows Act II: Through Horned Shadows Glimpse" (Moribund Records)

Short Description-Black Metal
    Origin: USA
Darren's Review- Into Shadows Act II got my attention right away. True Black Metal but with great melody. Not being a big fan of Black Metal, this is tolerable to me. I would have to say it is better than average. Long & melodic, this 7 song album changes directions before paralysis sets in. The album mix is average. Plenty of dynamics to please the fans. Vocals are a traditional black metal filled with evil. I love the epicness they bring to the table. I think they won't have a problem luring fans. Give them a shot!

CHAPTER VIII – “Your Halos Is My Noose”

Short Description- Thrashy Hard-core Metal
    Origin- ?
Mike’s Review- With such a neutral sounding band name such as Chapter VIII, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I hit play on my stereo. My response, “Holy Shit, this is good!” This is some very emotional hard core metal filled with insanity. The vocals are of the screaming death style and are pleasantly harsh. The guitars, bass, and drums are a non-stop adrenaline rush. There is a lot of energy pouring on this album. I love it. You will never get bored listening to these guys. www.chapterviii.com

ENCRIMSON’D- “Agrarian Menace”

Short Description- Black Metal
    Origin- Minneapolis, MN USA
Mike’s Review- Well, I am always excited to receive CDs to review from bands that live near to where I do. Unfortunately, I don’t have all good things to say about this band. The first two times that I attempted to listen to this CD, I stopped it before the first song was over. This time, I chose to listen to the rest of the CD so that the review is of the entire album and not just the first song. I’m glad that I did that because the rest of the album is a lot better and easier to listen to. I really love the guitars and bass. They are both very entertaining and probably what saved me from hating this CD. However, the vocals weren’t so pleasing. The growling is cool, but the screaming vocals just don’t sound like they belong anywhere on this CD. Not good. The drumming is pretty good but there are some parts of the song where he uses a cowbell or two (especially in track two) that doesn’t sound good. Overall, this band has a lot of potential to become something powerful. This IS their first full-length so this is just the beginning for them. I hope they stick to the black metal sound and continue to progress as a band. www.encrimsond.com

IMPULSE MANSLAUGHTER- "Live at WFMU" (Beer City Records)

Short Description- Punkcore
    Origin- Chicago, IL USA
Darren's Review- This album has 38 tracks and the 1st 17 tracks were recorded at WFMU radio station in 1993. Tracks 18-20 were taken from the "No War" split E.P with Provocation. 21-25 is from the "Sometimes" E.P., 26-28 from the "Logical End" album. 31-37 is from the album "He Who Laughs Last..." . Track 29 is from the compilation "Complete Death II", And Track 30 is an outtake. Now that that's all cleared up, on to the music. Short, fast, blunt, with snarly vocals. The live section from the radio show is decent quality, but could be better. Hardcore metal spiked with punk. Nothing fancy here, but gets the point across. Vocals are tough to deal. They do change it up a bit, they sound forced and difficult to understand and painful. Guitars seem to follow a mediocre path. The bass player is kicking the shit out! Overall, not my thing but they certainly could be worse.

RWAKE- “If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die”

    Origin- Arkansas, USA
Mike’s Review- Yeah, Holy Shit! Somebody hit me really hard! I had a chance to see these guys live (before I knew who they were) but chose not to go to the show. Now I hear their CD and wondering what they hell I was thinking that night. Take a little bit of grind, a little bit of noise, some heavy metal, a few samples, and a whole lot of stoner metal and you will get Rwake, a very kick ass band that everybody should check out. The screaming vocals, the melodic insanity, the overall mentality of living in two worlds at the same time. What the hell am I saying? I shouldn’t hype this band up too much. If you are a fan of Limp Bizkit or any nu-metal stuff, you would probably hate these guys (because they are too good for you). There is a lot of talent flowing through the veins of the Rwake members. SLAVEDRUM- "3 song E.P."

Short Description-Hardcore/Death Metal
    Origin: Illinois, USA
Darren's Review- ahhh, a 3 song E.P., enough to tell what a band can deliver. After 4 spins, this one is growing on me. I like the mix for sure. 2 tuned-low guitars venture where most bands don't and deliver the goods. The vocals are growly but at least it doesn't sound like his head is in a toilet bowl. I would like to hear a full-length when it is released. They have the potential to take it home. I see that on August 10th, they played a show at "THE RAVE" in Milwaukee with Fear Factory! (Fans of Fear Factory and Lamb of God will take a liking to them). I bet that show was great. If anybody was there, I want to hear from you! (darren@adrenalinfanzine.com). VERO- “How Does It Feel” (Among Giants/Dreamcatcher Records)

Short Description- Hard Rock
    Origin- U.K.
Mike’s Review- Well, I would be lying if I told you that these guys suck. Than again, I would be lying if I told you that I love them. They don’t suck because they are talented musicians, the songs are catchy, and they would do well on MTV or the rock radio station industry. The main reason that I dislike them is their sound is so far from being original that after only two minutes of listening to this album, I was tired of listening to it. There is a lot of anger inside of me that would love to rip apart bands that fail to have even a small portion of originality in them. You might as well be a cover band. Anyway, in other reviews, these guys have been noted as sounding similar to the Goo Goo Dolls with influences such as Incubus, Sevendust, Foo Fighters, and Deftones. Not a bad CD. I’m sure I could find a few people who would love it. Good but not at all original. www.dreamcatcher-records.com

Mike’s Review- This is a very powerful power metal band from Drogheda, Ireland. A lot of the music on this CD reminds me of some old school metal bands that I listened to in my earlier metal years. I am not a huge fan of power metal but I find myself getting into this CD. DROTTNAR "Anamorphosis"

Short Description- Black Metal

Origin: Norway
Dan's Review- Hailing from Scandinavia DROTTNAR makes a good mark with their EP "Anamorphosis". Being a big fan of black metal, I thought this album was good. Unfortunately their was only 3 actual songs. They gave you a taste of DROTTNAR, but I would prefer a 'bite' to get a better overall impression of them. DROTTNAR does in fact have a different sound than typical black metal, but honestly they aren't as brutal as they are hyped up to be. That could be good or bad depending on a metal-heads perspective. Overall, DROTTNAR's songs are well written and capture the atmosphere they are trying to create for the listener. The only downside to DROTTNAR is the vocals may tend to get a little irritating after extensive listening.  www.drottnar.com

Dan's Review- "Prepare yourself for a journey through green mountains and black valleys of doom" Frosthardr does just that. Frosthardr is an outstanding band. Frosthardr was one of the few Epic Black Metal bands I've heard and I was really impressed with them. Frosthardr creates so many moods in their songs its amazing. Frosthardr literally takes the listener on a journey. Guitars, Bass, and drums are all very well done and the vocals are exceptional in my opinion. They sent chills down my spine, which not many bands can do anymore. The lyrics are also very well written, so take the time to translate them. JAPANISCHE KAMPFHORSPIELE- "Fertigmensch" (

Style- Grind-core

Origin: Germany
Dan's Review- J.K. is a good all around grind-core band. They do have a different sound. All the vocals are in fact in German. "Fertigmensch" is a mix of very heavy guitars, drums, and techno?...Honestly the only downside to J.K. is the screaming vocals. The vocalist mixes some high pitched screaming vocals and some cookie monster growls. I personally think the screamer vocals need to go. Overall I liked J.K. and I think fans of this genre will too. SIX REASONS TO KILL / ABSIDIA "Morphology of Fear" (
Bastardized Recordings)

Styles: Metal / Hardcore Melodic Death
Dan's Review- "Morphology of Fear" was a split CD of two very good bands. Six Reasons To Kill is a very cool band. They are just straight up metal, very easy to listen and enjoy. Six Reasons to Kill fits the saying "Metal up your ass" perfectly. It's hard not to head-bang to their music. Very cool stuff. Six Reasons To Kill did a good job in writing songs any metal-head can enjoy.
Absidia's first track starts with "At my signal....unleash Hell" from the movie Gladiator. Ironically, that's just what they do. They unleash hell in every track with well thought brutal harmonized guitars and crashing drums. They remind me of Dismember in that sense, but yet they still have their own sound. Fans of the melodic death genre will not be disappointed with Absidia. I anxiously await some more music by Absidia in the near future.

RATING : A ( Both bands kick ass and deserve nothing less than an A. Keep up the good work) www.bastardizedrecordings.de

DRACONIAN- “Where Lovers Morn” (Napalm Records)

Short Description- Melodic Doom
    Origin- Sweden
Mike’s Review- Very melodic, very doom. Draconian’s melodic goth doom music is quite powerful. It gives you a total doom feeling and then adds soothing and graceful vocals and sounds to give it a dark atmospheric feel. I never imagined that I would ever use the words “graceful” and “soothing” in a review for a doom metal act. It is a good mix though.
To all you lovers of female vocals, Lisa Johansson has a very outstanding and mesmerizing voice. Her voice, combined with the male vocals (Anders Jacobsson) make such a great match that it’ll make you forget about all those vocalists out there that are simply horrible. Every aspect of this band gets my adrenaline flowing. It’s no wonder why they have such a strong label supporting them. www.draconian.se

Mike’s Review- I love the music but I’m not at al impressed with the vocals. I love many types of black metal vocals, but these are one of my least favorite. The intensity of the vocals are a big plus, but it’s not enough to help them out. Regardless, any black metal fan out there will want to check these guys out for the music.     Mike’s Description- High Road No. 28 is a trio of musicians from Australia. With this album, they provide you with heavy/groove rock with beats that will make it hard not to move with the music. “Time Desolation”, the acoustic instrumental, sets you into a calm mood before they hit you with “Intransigent” (the heaviest track on this 5-song E.P.). Even though this style of music isn’t a favorite of mine, I love the overall sound that is presented. WITHOUT END- “Disease Is Man” (Pseudoplasma Records)

Short Description- Thrash Metal
    Origin- USA
Mike’s Review- This project was started by Adam Tranquilli (Bloodfest, Headlock) to continue his music career of aggressive and chaotic thrash metal. With lyrics about people and their value on this planet, partying fearlessly, death as our fate, and more, Without End delivers one killer thrash album. The non-stop surges of brutal energy keep you listening to this album from beginning to end. The most impressive feature of this album is Tranquilli’s guitar solos. Mike Fernbacker (bass) and Adam Keifer (drums) both add their share of talent (insanity) to this album as well and help make it one that you will want to tell your thrash lovin’ friends about. www.pseudoplasma.com

With heart-pounding rapid beats, dark eerie guitars, and horrific experimental vocals, Maletic (the only member of this project), puts together a package that cannot be confused with any other black metal project. It took me little while to get into the vocals. However, after a couple tracks, the cold bitter sounds of Maletic’s vocal chords blended with the music and performed their duties of adding a distant soulless expression to the mix. www.moribundcult.com

FALKENBACH- "Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty" (Napalm Records)

Short Description-Melodic Metal
Origin: Germany (at least that is where the contact info states)
Darren's Review- Falkenbach form in 1989 and have a total of 3 albums to date (En Their Medh Riki Fara 1996, and Magni Blandinn Ok Megintin 1998). Fused with Folk and Black Metal, Falkenbach has a sound all to themselves.  When I first put this in, it immediately got my attention, 2 hours later and 3 listens through, I have become an addict! I would say it is more on the melodic side with better than average production and transcending acoustic overtones.  Also featuring soothing hypnotic dynamics that make up one hell-of-an-album!  Amorphis (newer) is a band that I could somewhat compare them too.  The band had brought in a collaboration of guest musicians for this album (Bolthorn-drums, Hagalaz-additional acoustic guitars, Tyrann-additional vocals) of the band Vindsval.  This album has prominently clean vocals with a touch of extreme.  A Metalheads album to relax too, sort of speak!  I WOULD HIGHLY recommend getting this.  If anything it is out of the ordinary and a great collection piece!  I would say I am forever a fan!

FORGOTTEN LORE- "Glittering Darkness"

Short Description-Black/Death Metal
    Origin: Italy
Darren's Review- Forgotten Lore formed in 2000 and have since worked very hard, releasing 2 live CD's along the way. In 2003 they win a competition for emerging groups! They then go to Rome to complete their first 5 song E.P. (Glittering Darkness) in 3 days! As I have stated in past reviews, this type of metal isn't my favorite. Forgotten Lore does a good job. My biggest beef with bands is vocal styles. Forgotten Lore's vocals are very intense and fall nothing short of being soft. I feel differently towards them. The vocals don't make me want to shut the shit off. Some of these bands I would rather listen to 1,000 cats being skinned alive & thrown in a vat of rubbing alcohol then listen to their singing. They have a unique enough feel to them to separate them from the norm. They break away for some clean vocals in track 3 "Lost Soul" which is a brave move. I think it works to their advantage and there will be only great things ahead for this band. The music sounds great ripping through my speakers. I will listen to this once again and it will make it to my PC jukebox (A sure sign if a band is worthy or not!). I would recommend this EP and to catch them live. Thumb's up for Forgotten Lore!

JAW- "Self-Titled" (Reversed Records)

Short Description-Nu Metal/Hardcore
    Origin: Canada (I believe)
Darren's Review- Jaw offers hard edged rock and roll with some of the most bizarre vocal stylings I have ever come across. The styles bring something new to the table and that is always welcome. I give them credit for trying to be diverse, but one particular vocal styling I can't stand. It isn't so growly I can't understand what they are saying, it just is painfully BAD! When the vocals merge from the clean (Which is where the problem lies). The music sounds good and is well produced with some neat studio tricks, but unfortunately the vocals take away from the overall experience. I would not recommend it, but feel free to decide for yourselves.

Mike’s Review: Yes! We have some pure metal action here. Susperia, formed by Tjodalv (ex-Dimmu Borgir, Old Mans Child) and Cyrus (Dimmu Borgir, Old Mans Child), focus their musical talents on a band who wishes to be categorized as pure aggressive metal. The metal sounds on this CD are superb. Just a half a minute into this CD, I was pulled in, and decided that this CD will become a part of my collection. What is so great about it? Everything. Can I be more specific than saying they are “metal”? No, because I want you to go to www.susperia.net and check them out! VINTERSORG- "The Focusing Blur" (Napalm Records)

 Short- Melodic Black Metal
    Origin: ?
Mike's Review: This is what you get when you cross folk music with black metal.  According to their bio, it sounds like Vintersorg has experimented with many styles and combinations of sounds.  With this album, you get a taste of black metal, power metal, & folk music, with a majority of the album being filled with clean vocals.  Black metal vocals appear in every song but not for a very long period of time.  At first, I liked the cheerful snappy attitude of the music, but after awhile, I got bored of it.  The musicians display a lot of creativity and talent though.  I'm thinking about checking out a couple of their previous albums.  I'm curious to see what other combinations of styles they have tried.   www.vintersorg.com

Dan's Review- First off, I'd like to congratulate the members of Dismember for once again kicking metal head's asses with this monster of an album. Fans of Dismember and the melodic death genre will not be disappointed with Dismember's newest album. This album was a breath of fresh air for me. A lot of bands of this genre are starting to sound nu-metalish and getting more radio friendly. Dismember thankfully has stuck to its roots on this album. Every song is packed with shear brutality and deadly harmonized guitars. Everything they put into their songs on this album flow nicely together to give one hell of a punch. HEARSE- "Armageddon Mon Amour" (
Karmageddon Media)

Description- Experimental Metal
    Origin: Sweden
Dan's Review- After listening to this album I wasn't entirely sure what to classify Hearse as, but whatever they are doing, they are doing one hell of a job doing. Being a big fan of Johan Liiva's work on earlier Arch Enemy albums, I was really looking forward to hearing this album. This album was satisfying to me and really enjoyed listening to it. Some songs had a more melodic death metal sound, some had a more straight up death metal sound, and one song had even had a Katatonia doom metal sound. Everything about Hearse just fits. Everything works well together. One of the best parts of Hearse is the solos. If your a fan of shredding solos like me you'll be pleased to hear that these guys sometimes whip out 3 bad ass solos in a row in some songs. Overall you cant go wrong with Hearse. I'm really looking forward to hearing some more from them. www.hearse.se

NYIA- "Head Held High"  (Candlelight Records)
    Description- Experimental Grind Core
   Origin: Poland
Dan's Review- I had high expectation for this album. The lineup sounded like a great. What could be better than inspiration of Jaroslaw Labieniec the guitarist of Vader and the vocals of Prophecy's Michal Pawluc. The first track on the album "Behind the God" literally made me laugh out loud. I seriously thought it was a joke. It was just a bunch of insane brutal drums, yelling, and off-key guitars. As I listened more, I soon found out the whole album was like this. I'll give NYIA one thing, they did manage to make a truly unique sounding album. However, after a couple tracks it just gets plain boring. Most of it just comes off as noise. I'm afraid NYIA is a little too 'unique' for most metal heads.

DESTINY- “The Tracy Chapter” (Lifeforce Records)
    Short- Hardcore Metal
    Origin: Europe
Mike’s Review- Ok, I think I just about had enough of this style of music.  I love melodic death metal (when it is done well) but I have been hearing way too many bands these days who have a really aggressive “kick your ass”  sound going on but then break into this mediocre melodic clean vocal shit and totally steal any moshibility and brutality that the band had going on.  As I have said in other reviews, the heavy death music is awesome but I have to give the band a lower grade for their disappointing nu-metal clean sound that is added in to just about every song.  I apologize to the band, Destiny, for unleashing, my fury for this music style in this review.  Destiny is quite a talented band and deserves much recognition for that.  I just have had enough of this death, clean, death, clean sound.  I want death….pure death.  www.destinyonair.com

ENDFACE- “Draw The Line”
    Short: Metal
    Origin: Buffalo, NY USA
Mike’s Review:  I try to find the good in every band I listen to.  Sometimes I don’t find anything good bout them.  On this CD, there is a lot of good, but also a lot of bad (yawn, yawn).  The good:  When the music is fast and heavy (metal).  The guitars are killer and the instruments fit together really well.  The heavy vocals are strong and captivating.  The bad:  When the music is slow (very alternative-like style).  Even though the music seems to have some experimental influence, it bores the crap out of me (primarily the vocals).  I need heavy and only ½ this CD seems to be heavy.  The rest of it is just a teaser.  Check them out at

The GREAT DECEIVER- “Terra Incognito” (Peaceville Records)
    Short- Hardcore Melodic Death
    Origin: Sweden
Mike’s Review:  The Great Deceiver was formed in 1997 by Tomas Lindberg after his former band, At The Gates, slit up.  I am a fan of music that was released by At The Gates.  However, I am farm ore impressed with what I am hearing on this album.  There seems to be a lot of bands out there that like to add some “melodic” or “hardcore” sound to their mix, but The Great Deceiver has mastered this sound and also managed to stay original.  The vocals alone are a reason to check out this album.  The guitar, bass, and drum sounds are mixed together really well and do an excellent job setting the melodic death mood to each song.  Every tune flows well and is different than the rest.  Check the out at www.thegreatdeceiver.com

JUNGLE ROT- 3-song Promo (Century Media)
    Short- Death
    Origin: Kenosha, Wisconsin USA
Mike’s Review- Well, this is a name that I have heard many many times since I started this ‘zine a decade ago. One reason is because Jungle Rot’s home is just a couple hours away from mine. Another reason is because their name sticks in my mind and I notice it every time I am looking for shows in Milwaukee and surrounding areas. The main reason though, is because they are fuckin’ awesome. I listened to this 3-song promo for their soon-to-be released full-length, “Fueled By Hate” and I am excited to hear some very pure death metal. This isn’t melodic death, or thrash death, or atmospheric death. This isn’t experimental or black metal or hardcore. This is death. Straight to the point death. This is “if you don’t fuckin’ like it, I don’t give a shit” death. I like the other styles that I previously mentioned, but there is something about these three songs of Jungle Rot that makes me want to hear them over and over again. I must get my hands on that full-length. It is being released by Century Media/Olympic Records on June 29th. To check these guys out, go to www.junglerot.net

SUNN O)))- “White 2” (Southern Lord)
    Short- Slow Doom/Experimental
    Origin: Unknown
Mike’s Review:  I’m not sure how to correctly describe this music.  I guess slow doom would be a good general description.  There is much more to it than that though.  It’s very experimental and not something you would listen to to get your adrenaline flowing.  There are three tracks on this album with lengths of 14, 23, and 25 minutes (respectively).  The buzzing, the chanting, the sci-fi noise, and other slow droning sounds are very hypnotic and are highly recommended for anybody who suffers for sleep deprivation.  This quote is taken from the back of the CD’s promo sleeve.  “…this is profound music for those beyond burnout, for those wishing to lick the void, for those who want to kill time dead or just step outside of it for awhile.”  You will either love this CD or hate it.  If you go to www.southernlord.com and check them out, be prepared to find something far from the “norm”.  Sunn O))) is a whole new experience.

THOR and MIKE HOFFMAN- “Beastwomen From The Center Of The Earth”
Short- Glam rock/metal
Origin: Who cares
Mike’s Review:  I was tempted to not even review this CD.  My policy is to review everything that I receive though so here it goes…  I don’t like it.  When I first read the bio for Thor I was hoping that this was a joke band.  But it’s not.  This is real.  A real glam rock band.  Apparently, Jon Mikl THOR has been in the music industry since 1973.  I guess as he aged and the music industry progressed, he chose to remain stuck in 1973.  If you are into the glam rock thing or in the mood for a good laugh, go check it out at www.thorcentral.com.  In the bio it mentioned that THOR has sold “hundreds of thousands of records” so I guess somebody must like this stuff.  Maybe it was his mom.

DRIVER 13- “Until The End Of Time”

Short: Hard Rock
    Origin: Madison, WI USA
Mike’s Review:  I knew when I received this CD that my review would have more influence to it than from just what I hear on the CD. I have seen this band perform live and know how powerful of a stage performance they have. Setting that aside though, this CD, with 9 tracks of catchy hard core rock, delivers some professional sounding and talented heavy rock mojo. In the vein of Alice In Chains, Godsmack, and several other modern rock bands that can be heard on radios nationwide, this band has the ambition and capability to make it big. THE NERDS- “A Black Star Burning Tails To Nowhere” (Scarey Records)
    Short: Punk Rock And Roll
    Origin: Italy
Mike’s Review:  This is some evil angst punk rock. I have had enough of that happy punk shit. If you are going to send me an album with any type of punk influence, this is what you should send me. In the vein of GG Allin, The Bulimics, Dwarves, The Nerds throw down a punk rock sound with some pissed off vocals and intense head-pounding fury. Old School. I love that guitar sound. That’s cool. Check out this Italian 4-piece at www.scareyrecords.tk

SELF-INFLICTED- “Beyond The Agony Of Never”
    Short- Sludge Death
    Origin: Oklahoma USA
Mike’s Review-  This some slow sludgy death metal. The recording isn’t excellent but it doesn’t suck either. It just seems to be missing a little high end or something. The music is cool enough though that the CD is worth a good listen anyway. I like the good ol’ classic riffs that are present in Self-Inflicted’s music. The low growls of Keith McCormick (that seems to be a good style of vocal to compliment this music) is impressive and well weaved into the music. Most of the bands that I listen to on a normal basis have more energy and blast to them, but this will be the perfect CD for those days when I want to sit back and chill out to some sludge metal. Check these guys out and see what they have to offer. www.punishmentpainsorrow.com

BLUT AUS NORD - "The Work Which Transforms God" (Candlelight Records)

Short Description-Black Metal
    Origin: France
Darren's Review- Formed in 1994 as a one man side project (Vlad), Blut Aus Nord has amassed a sizeable recording history that remains out of reach to U.S. audiences. Candlelight Records Describes them as "the musical equivalent of Mayhem sodomizing Neurosis with a Godflesh joystick".
Blut Aus Nord is very hardcore with eeriness lurking from every note. As I have mentioned before, Black Metal really isn't my thing. I can tell they are experimenting with different sounds which define their originality. You have to give any band credit for that, especially these days. Black Metal fans should enjoy this release. I see Kerrang and Terrorizer have given them great reviews. Blut Aus Nord, I have no idea what it means! It has been released in Europe and America.

FEAR MY THOUGHTS- "The Great Collapse" (Lifeforce Records)

Short Description-Hardcore Metal
    Origin: Europe
Darren's Review- Formed in 1998 and have a handful of releases under their belt, Fear My Thoughts have been building a nice fan base. From my understanding, "The Great Collapse" is a bit different that its predecessors, taking a chance and steering away from its oldschool hardcore days. I can't comment on the previous releases, but this one delivers. Fear My Thoughts... cool name I thought as I pondered the CD cover. Before I even hit play I had high expectations because "Trivium" (now a member of Roadrunner Records) hailed from the Lifeforce family. As I pushed play I was not disappointed. Smashing riffs came crumbling down like "The Great Collapse". Production is good as well as the mix. The vocals are harsh. Unlike typical death metal vocals it is more of a hardcore yell than the cookie monster style. For me, the vocals are tough to deal with all the way through. Luckily, the music makes up for it.
Fear My Thoughts has shared the stage with Dillinger Escape Plan, Caliban, Catharsis, Shai Hulud, The Icarus Line, Shora, Cataract and numerous more, and performed at some of the biggest European hardcore festivals. The music can appeal to most metal fans and would be a great addition to one's collection. Already released in Europe and America. Go find it!

WHORE - "Unfinished Business"

Short Description-Death Metal
    Origin: Unknown
Darren's Review- When receiving this CD I immediately stereo-typed the shit right out of it. Staring at me was a pink cover with some of the worst artwork I have ever seen. Featuring a male with a bloody knife urinating into the mouth of an unborn baby of the victim he has obviously mutilated. Opening up and reading the liner notes and seeing it contain plenty of serial killer photo's and tons of offensive pictures, I thought this band was going for attention and the music was going to be atrocious. Well, I was right for the most part! Cookie monster vocals spewing ridiculous lyrical content ( Ex: My friends parents trusted me/they let me watch their kid/that was the biggest mistake they ever made/I molested that piece of shit/I did more than change the kids diapers/I fingered that 5 month old cunt/she used my cock for a teething ring). Come on, what the fuck is this? If they took out all the bullshit and left only the instruments, it wouldn't be half bad. Oh yeah, and having a pentagram, 666 and an upside down cross on the disc itself really makes it sell, right? I am so sick of this shit. I would stay far away from this if I were you!

ENSOPH- "Opus Dementiae"

Short- Experimental (black) Metal
    Origin- Italy
Mike's Description- In terms of originality, this band is fuckin' awesome.  I haven't reviewed a CD in the history of Adrenalin that could compare to Ensoph.  This band falls into the category of extreme metal but in an experimental type of way.  What's the recipe for this artwork?  Take a black metal band, add melody here and there, some evil industrial sounds, some occasional deep Peter Steele like (Type O Negative) vocals, some female background vocals, with some screamin' black metal vocals, and a brain-busting amount of insanity.  Add that together and you will get what is presented on this disc.   www.ensoph.it

GREENHAVEN (Humble Recordings)

Short Description: Rock-N-Roll
    Origin: Phoenix, AZ USA
Darren's Review- Greenhaven was born in 2001 from the heat of the Arizona desert. Founder Matt Strangwayes came from Pavement Records artists "Windingo". He constructed the remaining members from the ashes of the band "Love Not Human".
This demo only has 2 tracks on it. The first track "Southbound" is awesome! An upbeat slammer that makes you want to groove. The mix sounds good and it really gets the blood flowin. I like the singer. Clear crisp vocals with a unique twist. The second track "Supernature" is "so-so". A mid-temponess that has an eerie feel to it. The CD did contain a video for "Southbound" that was very entertaining. I see they have been voted Phoenix's Best Hard Rock Band. I definitely will keep an my eye out for them and look forward to a full length album soon! Keep your eyes peeled!

HARVEST OF SOULS-Demo

Short Description: Emotional Rock
    Origin: Brooklyn, NY USA
Darren's Review- Harvest of Souls is a 3 piece outfit blending hard rock with melody and a twist of soulful lyrics. The singer Brian Sutor took professional singing lessons from a renowned vocal trainer. He later switched from playing guitar to bass to fulfill the needs of the band. This demo contains 3 tracks. I have listened to this about 6 times because I wasn't sure how I felt about it. It has positives and negatives. I do think the singer has a good voice. I think the overall feel is lacking something. It just doesn't reap what the band I feel can sow. I think they can be a lot better. The music is mediocre and is slow developing. It is well produced and Engineered. Anyone looking to rock out should think twice before listening to this. If you feel like chillin, this may be for you. I love all kinds of music in all types of genres. Harvest of Souls has what it takes, but needs to keep truckin'. I would be interested in hearing their next release. Check them out for yourselves!

TORN- "The Path Less Traveled"

Short- Metal
    Origin- Illinois, USA
Mike's Description- Wow, I received this CD a long time ago but forgot to review it.  It has been in one of my CD players for awhile now.  Anyway, Torn always reminded me of a familiar band.  I could never put my finger on it though.  The closest match that I came up with is the band, Soil.  Of course, there are many other signed acts of the same style that could be compared to these guys as well.  The music is cool (especially the guitars).  The vocalist has great vocal ability (but sometimes lack originality).  They remind me of vocals that I hear on the radio a lot.  Did I mention the guitars are cool?  I would say that's what impresses me most about this group.  If this CD was a little more original, I would add it to my collection.   www.wearetorn.com

1349 - "Beyond the Apocalypse" (Candlelight Records)

Short Description-Black Metal
    Origin: Norway
Darren's Review- 1349 sums up a talented group of black metal masters. Extremely potent black metal at its finest. 1349 was formed in 1997, and named for the year the plague hit Norway in the 14th century. They released a self-titled mini-album in 2001. At that time they featured then session drummer Frost (Satyricon). He was so impressed with the music and sound of the band became a permanent member. They signed with Candlelight, and in 2002 the released their first full length titled "Liberation". The band then toured with Gorgoroth and Cadaver (Inc) and performed at numerous festivals.
Heavy and hard hitting, this band will please and appeal to the fans of Gorgoroth, Immortal, and Mayhem. I am not a huge black metal fan, but I don't hear too much to complain about. I am amazed at how fast they can play! It is produced and engineered well. Lots of tempo changes & blast beat. Vocals are tolerable and fit the music. The album will be released on 5/4/04, score it!!

CADAVER- "Necrosis" (Candlelight USA)
    Short Description-Death Metal
    Origin: Norway
Darren's Review- Cadaver formed in 1989, and released two albums (Hallucinating Anxiety, In Pains) before disbanding in 1993. After reforming in 1999, their 3rd album (Discipline) was released in 2001. The gained a wide U.S fan base on a nationwide trek with Morbid Angel. With their highly controversial web site, (They promoted their album as the cybershop Cadaverinc.com where customers could buy Alibi for murder) still under investigation by the Norwegian Government, the band was able to make a name for itself.
Cadaver did not appeal to me personally. There is nothing out of the ordinary here. By all means it is not terrible either. The music sounds tight. I just don't care for the singer. A singer can make or break a band. Music seems average to me. I always try and listen to an album twice before judging it. And in this case, I did just that. It may fit right up your alley though! I see that Candelight plans to assemble a showcase tour with Cadaver, Zyklon, and Khold. For sure in Europe, and look for possible U.S. dates this fall! Album was released in the United States on 4/20/04. www.cadaverinc.com for more.

PRO-PAIN- "Fistful of Hate" (Candlelight USA)
    Short Description-Hardcore Metal
    Origin: USA, New York City
Darren's Review- Pro-Pain is no stranger to the metal world. There debut was released 12 years ago (Foul Taste of Freedom, 1992). They have since released 9 albums, including a "Best Of" (Best of Pro-Pain, 1998) and a live release (Road Rage Live, 2001). They have sold many albums, toured, and have enjoyed success throughout their career. When a band can find a way to brave the elements and remain intact, that says a lot to me. There is something to be said about longevity. It seems to be a rare occurrence these days, doesn't it?
2004's release "Fistful of Hate" is very powerful. Probably the thickest guitar tones I have ever heard! Heavy is an understatement folks! Dense, slow to moderate chugging guitars layered with pounding bass, percussion and serious attention getting vocals. The songs remain true to form throughout the album, only straying enough to keep the listener entertained. I have not heard much from their other releases, but after listening to this album, I crave more. "Fistful of Hate" It is well produced and engineered. Metal fans will not be disappointed. The real highlight to me is the guitars. As a guitar player myself, I am envious of the guitar tonality they have infused.

Great news!! It was released in the states on April 6, 2004! A full U.S. tour is planned for June of this year. I highly recommend picking this up. Check out Candlelight Records www.manicmusiconline.com or visit the Pro-Pain official Site www.pro-pain.org.

9MM SOLUTION- "The Trial"

Short Description-Hardcore Metal
    Origin: Milwaukee, WI-USA
Darren's Review- This 6 song E.P. I was pumped and excited to hear. I knew a bit about them, and they are a local band! When I received the disc, expectations were already set. (I had checked out two tracks online) And they were met! 9mm Solution has performed with Anthrax, Society 1, Dope & Slaves on Dope to name a few. They also recorded with Producer Chris Djuricic (Soil, Order by Chaos) and the EP was Mastered by Trevor Sadler (Nine Inch Nail, Crash Test Dummies... hmmmmmmmm, hmmmmmmmm, hmmmmm, hmmmmmmmm !!!). The end result is a well put together E.P. The songs have a nice base full of metal feel, while experimental vocals breathe new life. I like the vocal stylings. There are low growls, high screams, and transcending, melodic layers placed throughout. When a band has enough balls to gamble, branch out and try something new, that says a lot to me. I wouldn't say they are experimental enough to discern the "metal fan", but enough to put there own unique stamp on the metal world. I would like to check them out live. I have read they take performing very seriously and really push to make the experience one of a kind. I wish the best of luck to them! Check out www.9mmsolution.com for all the details!

ETERNAL SILENCE- "The Dawning Of Chaos" demo

Short Description- Death Metal
    Origin: USA- New London, WI
Mike's Review- Wow, this is some killer death metal!  I heard of this band quite a few years ago but never gave them a good listen.  I just obtained this demo with their newer material on it and now I am kicking myself for not getting my hands on this demo earlier! The base of their music is pure ass-kicking death metal. Within their songs lurk some melodic moods, a little black metal influence, some very catchy riffs, and enough brutal energy to make you feel like God of the world you live in. I think what really put this band over the edge for me though is that both guitarists and the bassist all have the ability to growl and perform their vocals duties very well. You can check out some 2-minute samples of their songs on their website. www.eternaldeath.com

EXPERIMENT FEAR- Promo 2000

Short Description- Thrashy Death Metal
    Origin: USA- Appleton, WI
Mike's Review-  Have you heard of these guys before?  Experiment Fear made their mark in the underground scene quite a few years back but then disappeared.  Now they are back and ready to take on any hurdles that are thrown their way.   When you give this promo a listen, their brutal thrashy death metal will put you in awe.  The drums are incredible with the speed and precision.  The guitars and bass are magnificent and will stick in your head long after the CD has ended.  And the vocals....damn I wish I could growl and scream like that!  What a great group of musicians.  I don't think they have recreated a website yet since their return to the underground but you can contact Tom Ales at tomales@new.rr.com if you would like to contact them.  Hopefully a full-length will soon be here.  For now, check out one of their songs on Adrenalin's MP3 page.

DAATH- "Futility"

Short Description- Bizarre Metal
    Origin: USA- Atlanta, GA
Mike's Review- First impression.....really cool.  The vocalist sounds like he wants to tear into your head and munch on your brains.  The music is mostly has a death metal feel to it, but often wanders off to some type of sci-fi sounding synth and guitars and sometimes a melodic tangent.  Hell yeah, this is the perfect band for a metalhead that is searching for something different.  The fact that every song on this CD can be well distinguished from the others proves the originality and talent that Daath possesses.  I think everybody should go to www.daathmusic.com and check this shit out!  Make sure you read their bio while you are there.  It will give you something to think about.

FROZEN SHADOWS- "Hantises" (Holy Records)

INSOMNIUM- "Since the Day it All Came Down" (Candlelight USA)

Short Description-Melodic Metal
    Origin: Finland
Darren's Review- This is Insomnium's follow up to 2002's In the Halls of Awaiting. Compared to early In Flames, Amorphis, Opeth and Children of Bodom, I would agree. It does remind me of Amorphis (Elegy era) the most. Melody is blended with heavy attributes to from an awesome mix. It can go from beautifully acoustic to purely aggressive, reaching all points between. Vocals alternate with the mood. They do a great job of combining fragments to complete a great listening experience for the music fan. I am not bored with this, the vocals are in tolerable range. Just when I think something could get stale, it morphs into something new! I see bright things ahead for this band. Release date for Europe is May 3rd, 2004 and US is May 4th, 2004. KHOLD-"Morke Gravers Kammer" (Candlelight USA)

Short Description-Groovy Black Metal
    Origin: Norway
Darren's Review- Holy Shit!! These guys look evil as hell! Formed in 2000 from the ashes of Tulus. This is their 3rd release. There lyrical concept I thought was interesting. It is about a dark, rocky chamber. The last stop before souls are taken away. The dead wake up and dance to the sounds of violins while awaiting demons to collect their souls. If you believe in that sort of thing. On to the music. Setting the vocals aside for a minute, I really dig it. All elements are there. Bass is pounding, guitars hit the grooviness switch, and alternate to extremes when necessary. Drums sound great. Now, the vocals. Damnit!! To me, this is what makes or breaks a band. In my book, this doesn't suffice. It's not terrible, but enough to keep me from listening to it again. Most tracks are mid-tempo, and some are up-tempo. The CD also came with a video for the track "Dod". Decent added feature. Release date in Europe will be April 5th 2004, and the USA April 20, 2004. MITHRAS-"Worlds Beyond The Veil" (Candlelight USA)

Short Description- Melodic, Hardcore Death Metal!!!!
    Origin: UK
Darren's Review- Whoa.... Craziness!!! The first track was a freakish blend of haunting tones leading to the ultimate anticipation, then WHAM!! hits you like a mach truck! The title track "Worlds beyond the Veil" comes smashing down with INSANE drumming (drum machine, well programmed), growly vocals, extremely heavy guitars with plenty of harmonics. There are well placed sound effects throughout the album. The vocals are very intense. I believe it fits the music, but a bit much for me. Guitars are above average. There is definitely talent here. Percussion fits too. If they recruited a drummer, he would have to be a superhero!! This music for the most part is fast tempo'd. I like the mix of mellow to hardcore and back. They formed in 1998. The name was derived from an ancient and celebrated Persian God. This release is already out in Europe (March 8th) and will hit the states on May 4th, 2004. 13 tracks. Worth checking out, that is for sure!! www.mithras.org.uk or www.candlelightrecords.co.uk

NANOCHRIST- "Mythelectronicon"

 Short Description- Heavy Metal/Industrial
    Origin: Canada- Toronto, Ontario
Mike's Review- This CD contains 13 tracks of industrial heavy metal with some prog rock influences thrown into the mix.  I applaud them for their originality.  It's nice to hear some music that is a bit off-the-wall (crazy).  I remember reviewing another album of theirs in the past and thinking the same thoughts.  There a couple instrumentals on this disc worth checking out (as well as the rest of the tracks).  Professional recording and awesome promo-pack.  To check them out and see what they are all about, go to www.nanochrist.com I love that guitar solo in track 10!

ROASTING POSERS- Volume 1 (Heavycore Records)

Short Description- DVD Compilation of metal videos
    Origin: USA- Illinois
Mike's Review-  When I first heard of Pete Altieri of Heavycore putting together this compilation of music videos, I didn't think the end result would be very impressive.  But, holy shit! Pete pulled it off.  16 bands (members) of Heavycore came through and are included on the DVD full of death/heavy metal videos!  Each music video is introduced with a little tidbit about the band and for a segue in between videos, you will see a couple chicks dancing on a table.  A few of the bands included on the DVD are: Pro-pain, Low Twelve, Osmium, and Systemic.  This is an awesome DVD with some killer videos of bands.  Also included is a couple segments made up by Heavycore.  One of them features the roasting of a poser (probably a Linkin' Park fan").  For a full list of bands and more information about this DVD, check out www.roastingposers.com

RONIN- "The Sun Rises In The East"

Short Description- Heavy Rock
    Origin: USA- New York, NY
Mike's Review- Yeah, I'm diggin' this.  This is not a style of music that I would get into a whole lot, but all the elements of this music seem to click.  The music, sometimes slow and almost psychedelic and sometimes a heavy rock, sets the "kickback and let loose" feeling throughout the whole CD.  Track 3, "Portal" is one to avoid though.  I am not sure what the plans were when those vocals racks were recorded, but they suck.  The rest of the vocals are good though.  Check them out at www.roninband.com

WACKOR- demo
    Short Description- metal
    Origin: Hungary
Mike's Review: This is a 3-piece rock/metal band with a little growling added in.  This band can be easily compared to bands such as Disturbed & Evanesence (a combination of the two).  The talent is there but there but with only three tracks on the demo it is hard to tell where they rank with their originality.  Overall the music is OK.  The vocals are good.  It just seems like something is missing in the music.  magatrash@freemail.com or www.wackor.hu

CHAINSNAP- "Hollow"

Short Description- Dark Metal-core
    Origin: USA- Middleton, Wisconsin
Mike's Review- I am always psyched to hear music from bands in my area so I couldn't wait to put this CD in and give it a listen.  My first impression was good but after hearing tracks 2 and 3 on this album, I wasn't sure if I wanted to hear anymore.  The heavy vocals are cool but the higher clean vocals weren't very appealing at all.  Luckily, those vocals don't surface in other tracks and the rest of the album was cool.  They categorize their music as dark metal-core.  Sounds like there is a bit of 80's thrash added in to the mix as well.  Overall this is a good CD, I just didn't get use to those vocals that I mentioned earlier.  You can here a few songs and learn more about Chainsnap at www.chainsnap.com

CNN ANNWN (Coo-nah-NOON)- demo

Short Description- Thrash Metal
    Origin- USA- Minnesota
Mike's Review- This is thrash metal with some power metal influence to it.  Some old-school punk influences seem to lurk within the music as well.  The CD is demo has excellent sound quality and it is packed full of chargin' energy.  The drums, guitars, bass, and vocals are all delivered to you as a package of metal goodness.  The guitars are the most impressive with their various solos and brain splitting riffery.  Check out Cwn Annwn at www.cwnannwn.com NOTE:  The clean higher-pitched vocals sound a bit unintentionally harsh and could use a little work but the band is still worth checking out.

DOWNSET- "Universal" (Hawino Records)

Short Description- Rap Metal
    Origin: USA- L.A., California
Mike's Review- You just can't get any more rap metal than this band.  The music is very metal and the vocals are very rap (with a little metal scream added in).  the music is very cool.  The vocals are disappointing (boring) though.  There needs to be more emotion added to them.  I wish I could give this CD a better review since it is well-produced and being well-promoted.  I don't like it.  Check it out for yourself at www.downset.net if you're interested.

HARDER AND HEAVIER (Madacy Entertainment)

Short Description- 80's metal compilation
    Origin: USA- Santa Monica, CA
Mike's Review- "Welcome To The Jungle" by Quiet Riot?  "Shout At The Devil" by Electric Hellfire Club"?  Interesting concept.  I like it.  This compilation contains 16 tracks of rock n roll and metal tunes from the 80's era that are performed by other bands from the 80's era.  This is worth checking out and should be an interesting addition to any collection (unless of course you are too young to know what 80's metal is).  My favorite track on here has to be Metallica's "Jump In The Fire" performed by The Ramones.  For a complete track listing and a list of who performs what on this disc, find this CD on www.amazon.com

KURTZ- "A Metal Heritage For Young America"

Short Description- Sludge Metal
    Origin: United States- Atlanta, Georgia
Mike's Review- Wow, I like this stuff!  Sludgy groove music in the vein of Clutch.  Vocals are vice and heavy, very dominate.  The guitars are really impressive as well.  Instead of following the same path throughout he song and just chuggin' along, they sometimes wander off to make sure you are well aware of their existence.  Check out what they have to offer at kurtz.4strength.com

BOWLSCRAPER-"Red Hair Revolution"

Short Description-Thrash meets Heaviness!
    Origin: United States-Detroit, Michigan
Darren's Review- Mutha Fucka!!! I was fond of this band right from the start. I love the driving riffs and straightforwardness Bowlscraper has to offer, not to mention their name! I really dig the vocal style. You can understand the message they are trying to convey, without piercing your eardrums. It seems to fit the music perfectly. Guitars, bass and percussion are dead nuts on. There is tons of energy harnessed by this foursome. Live I am sure they are a forced to be reckoned with! The only thing I had a quarrel about was the solo's. Note for note there is nothing wrong with them, but it seemed to lack the muscle the rhythm offers. When the song broke into solo, something seemed to be missing. This is only a minor flaw and is easily overlooked. I have had this album for a little over a week and have listened to about a dozen times and have played it for friends without any hesitation. 14 tracks of punishment await! This is a great score! KTD-"Territory" (Hydrant Records)
    Short Description-Experimental Rock
    Origin: United States-New England

Darren's Review- Well, I wasn't sure what to expect when I received this album. I usually have an idea of what a band will sound like by reading up on them and studying the disc artwork, liner notes, etc. I was surprised, as this does not fall into any category. I had to listen to it all the way through before I could gather my thoughts. After a 3 listens, here goes... I love their attitude. KTD (Kick the Dog) is a metaphor for
